During her long journey back to the Upper West Side she realized she has been blinded by her view of Lenny as an entity, instead of a comic, instead of a man. It played along with the magnetism, the wit and charm, flitting in and out of her life like a smoky, whiskey-drenched mirage. It was easier to view him that way, easier to ignore the fact that he understood her in a way no one else in her life could. That there was something in her he recognized, from the very beginning.

He lightly touches her back as they turn off 8th Avenue. “The word ‘plan’ implies that I woke up this morning with the intent to seduce, not to, how did you put it?”
“Materialize.”
“Right! Materialize in your life during yet another city-wide crisis. I started today with fairly low hopes of seeing a friendly face at all, but when I saw you in the bar I thought, you know, if we haven’t completely fucked up this whole-” Lenny gestures between them “-thing, then I’d be an idiot not to try, at least. I gotta find out how the show corset holds up to extreme weather.”

He was so jealous he couldn’t breathe, and behind his closed eyelids he was back in the Gaslight watching Lenny Bruce introduce Midge as a friend, as someone who was going to be very big, and as someone who was easy on the eyes. Only this time the soundtrack wasn’t the laughter and applause of a packed club, but instead was Lenny Bruce moaning his ex-wife’s name, and Midge’s voice answering back.
