It was just a silly little scrimmage. Something they did with the juniors once a month. Not Roy’s favorite thing in the world, but it gave the senior squad a break and a chance to work with the kids. Mentoring or some shit. Roy had his hands full mentoring the fucking first team most days, didn’t really fancy adding more to his plate, so he showed up as expected and he grunted and shouted a bit, but didn’t take any special interest in any of the juniors. Especially the U16s. Most of them washed out long before they were promoted to the reserves, so they weren’t really worth his time or attention anyway. That was why he was loping down the pitch without a care in the world when one of the juniors knocked him right off the fucking ball.
Mo trotted over and pulled Roy to his feet.
“What the fuck happened, man? You let him level you.”
“Who the fuck is that?”
“Jamie Tartt.”

Oh, life did try to separate them, on a number of occasions, but it could never succeed. Not when their link was so strong, defying logic and even common sense.
It did come close a couple times though, closer than either of them would have liked. And life didn't spare either of them even on their own. But Robby was always there for Jack. And Jack was always there for Robby. Even when they doubted it.
It was just a matter of time until they realized they were made to be together. A reasonable amount of time. Say forty years, for example. Really, how long can four decades be? Perhaps just long enough to become aware of one's undying love for their best friend.It had always been love, hadn’t it? Robby had always loved Jack. It didn’t truly matter that he hadn’t known. Because it could never erase it. It could never make it disappear. And most importantly, it was still there. Knowing had only made it more painful. It made the love he felt explode in ways his heart didn’t know how to handle.

But something was wrong, some unnamable instinct rising within Jack at the way they moved. It was too fluid, too controlled. Jack knew what the walking wounded looked like, had seen it for years, from war zones to bar fights. This wasn't the injured seeking help; this was men hunting.
Time slowed, Jack's heart rate spiking, the adrenaline dump casting everything in sharp relief—the full ED floor, patients plus shift change meaning twice the usual personnel were here.
Robby was here.
That thought got him moving, Jack approaching laterally. He got there right as the guns came out.
