Dennis dips his head, cradling Robby’s face as he tenderly brings their mouths together.
It’s so different from earlier, not impulsive and volatile, but soft, tender.
Robby’s beard tickles a bit, as it scrubs against Dennis’ chin and cheeks. He likes it, likes it a lot. He’s imagined this beard a lot, against his skin, his face, in his hands, between his legs, fuck.
He drags his thumbs through the hair there as Robby opens his mouth beneath Dennis. Robby’s lips are cracked, a little dry, a little chapped, and Dennis knows it’s because the man never drinks any fucking water, no matter how much he and Jack try and force it into him.

It’s an awful day.
It’s one of those shifts that feels like there isn’t a second to breathe. It’s back to back with trauma calls, cardiac arrests, patients deteriorating left right and centre.
They have four patients awaiting ICU before 8 o’clock.
Dennis hasn’t had time to eat or pee or drink or do literally anything other than run from room to room treating patients, and Robby won’t touch him, and he feels a little bit like he’s going insane.

Dennis wakes up already on edge, like his skin doesn’t fit right. For a brief moment, he’s confused, and a little dazed, because he doesn’t actually recognise where he’s woken up.
He’s in a big room, airy and light, in bed that’s at least twice the size of his own.
There’s art on the walls, and pictures — a little blurry, which is odd —, and an assortment of objects and possessions which decidedly don’t belong to him.
Including a pair of crutches?

Today has been busy, and Dennis has been rushed off of his feet.
He did eat, but he didn’t have time to finish his lunch, and he’s been so busy that he hasn’t had the chance to go back yet.
He’s halfway through updating a patient’s chart when the words on the screen blur, not fully disappearing but smearing together in a way that makes no sense. He blinks, hard, frowns, leans closer, but letters swim stubbornly out of focus.
That’s… weird.

Something’s wrong with Dennis.
It starts small, just little things that Robby hardly registers at first. It’s a busy day, it’s been a busy week, so when it vaguely ticks that Dennis is a little quieter than usual during rounds, fumbling his notes, missing cues he normally catches, he doesn’t actually think twice about it.
Nor how when Robby asks him a question about a patient’s chart, and Dennis blinks like he’s been startled awake.
It’s only when Robby looks, really looks, that he notices that something is… off.Actually off.

Summary
Dennis Whitaker doesn’t like Hastings. She’s bratty, loves herself too much, can’t keep quiet, and worst of all, has an eye for his Attending.
What Dennis doesn’t expect, is to start coughing up huckleberries. Irony.
OR
“Hope you know what you’re doing.” Dana says, eyes trailing her as she pauses in her steps.
Hastings brows furrow closer before realization flickers on her expression. She obviously schools it into something calm. “I’m a big girl.” She dismisses.
“It’s Robby.” Dennis says, unable to hide the bit of resentment in his voice. “Everyone thinks they’re a big girl until he—“ Dennis realizes how bad this sounds, looking back at his computer and going back to charting. “Sorry.”
Hastings blinks, “I’m sorry, you weren’t included in this conversation.”
He just looks at her, then gestures to the hospital. “Next time you want to talk about going home with my Attending, try to keep it down. Or do it somewhere else.” Dennis says, snarky if he must admit, leaving to go find his wandering med students.

Robby stands there, lost and unable to move as he watches his husband be taken from him.
Langdon walks up to him, hand gently resting on his shoulder as he forces their eyes to meet.
“Go,” it’s all he says.
Robby shakes his head, jaw clenching, deflated. “I can’t, I've got a hospital to run. There’s nothing I can do right now.”
Langdon laughs slightly, shaking his head in disbelief. “Robby, if that man means anything to you, and from what I've just gathered, he means everything, then you need to be there for him. You will be no good to us if your mind isn’t in this, if you’re constantly worrying about him. We can cope without you for one day, and I’m sure Doctor Abbot isn't going to say no to coming in a few hours early for you. Go be with him, even if it’s just waiting up there, he’ll know.”
Robby looks at him, feeling almost hollow. Useless.
~or Dennis gets hit by a car and is left in critical condition but the only on who can snap Robby out of it and get him moving again to save his husband's life is currently laying unconscious in a hospital bed.
or or, Robby is terrified and breaks when his husband hurt and really needs a hug.

They all startle when the curtain is ripped open, rattling the entire frame from the force of it.
“What the fuck is going on in here?” Robby nearly shouts, voice gruff and raised.
His eyes are frantic as he searches the room, finally settling on where Dennis is. He makes his way forward, falling to Dennis' side and swallowing roughly.
“Hi,” Dennis winces, knowing how much trouble he’s about to be in.
“Why the fuck was I not informed about his earlier?” he demands, “not only as Dennis’ emergency contact, but at the fucking cheif of this ER department?”
They all avoid eye contact, and Dennis sighs, drawing his attention back.
“It’s my fault, don’t blame them,” he pleads, "I asked them to not tell you yet.”
Robby looks almost hurt at his words, jaw clenching as if struck.

or Dennis gets hurt and decides against medical advice (that he is trained in) to walk to the hospital instead of calling for help and somehow convicts the team to not tell Robby about it. As completely expected, this backfires entirely.

Robby wanted nothing more than to walk around the truck and make the guy roll down his window so he could throw as many punches as he could before taking Dennis far away from there.
Instead Robby kept his gaze on Dennis, eyes pleading.
Dennis looked back at Robby with sad eyes. “I have student loan payments due… I…”
“I’ll pay you double what he will. Triple even,” Robby spoke quietly as he stepped closer to Dennis, “Whatever it takes to bring you home with me.”
