The same crazed blue was visible in Dabi’s eyes. Even in the shadow of a collapsing wall, reflecting the light of a cigarette. He drew in short, lazy puffs, like he was sipping a cheap beer.

Hawks smirked, but it didn't reach his eyes.
“Not at all,” he’d said. The nod he’d gotten in return gave assent as much as it did command.
It’s not a problem, that nod said. So do it.

When Hawks takes the mission to get in Dabi's good graces, he knows that it might involve putting his body, as well as his career, on the line. Sex, to him, is just another option on the table.

Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn't hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.

Hawks is a trained hunter, spearing out from the compound to collect much needed supplies and kill any Corpses that cross his path. He's the best of the best; a survivor and a weapon all in one. But when his team gets overwhelmed during a supply mission gone wrong and he loses his best friend and occasional lover, Rumi, his world is turned upside down.
Getting picked up by a pretty, white-haired Corpse that speaks was not on his bucket list. Being taken right into the middle of the Corpse's territory was also not on his list. And falling in love with said white-haired Corpse? You've got to be joking.

Book one ends with two major diffrences: 1. Sokka went on the mission with Hahn (it did not go well) 2. Zhao survives the North Pole and that proves unfortunate for everybody (except Zhao, obviously)
Imprisoned on Zhao’s war ship, Sokka and Zuko have to work together to survive. They are not very enthusiastic about this prospect.
And they argue.

He holds his breath, and he holds the gaze, afraid it will be gone if he blinks. But no, he is not hallucinating. It’s Hawks. Standing there, arms and legs crossed, leaning back against the scuffed brick wall, watching him for who knows how long. Completely still.
This is bad. This is dangerous. And yet Dabi’s first coherent thought is that in the darkness of the night, the red of Hawks’ wings looks black.
Or, how Dabi met Hawks in the four suits verse. It was lust at first sight but it took them a while to get in bed together. Or alleyway in this case.

Summary
Just the idea of having his soulmark disfigured or destroyed... it sent chills down Hawks’ spine. His own soulmate might be dead, but he couldn’t imagine not having Touya’s name marking his skin. The mere thought had him resisting the urge to pull his sleeve up and check to see it was still there.
Did Dabi do this to himself, he wondered? Did he burn his own soulmark away? The thought was incomprehensible. Dabi was a dangerous villain who was capable of many things, kidnapping, conspiracy, and murder just to name a few. But could someone, even someone like him, do something so vile to themselves? Even villains had to care about their soulmates, right?

Honestly fifty-fifty chance,” he said with false cheeriness, giving the group a thumbs up.

“Your majesty.” The man in horrifically opulent robes bows low, the ridiculous sleeves pooling on the floor in a puddle of silk. “We have brought you a spoil of war, captured during the battle of Kamino, a rare and exotic creature for your household.” Touya sits up a little in interest, this was rather unusual as far as presents for his father went. The doors open with a heaving groan, and Touya leans forward in open interest. He was expecting a large cage to be wheeled in, containing some fantastical creature like a small wyvern or a kirin. Instead the servants yank on heavy chains, pulling in a young man with massive crimson wings.
“A harpy, your majesty, tamed and trained for battle by the enemy. He was captured in combat, and has spent the last six months undergoing training to become a suitable pet for the royal household. I give him to you, your majesty, to serve whichever role his highness pleases.”

He can’t even be married off for political gain, he’s the royal equivalent of a genetic dead end. The one thing he has left to give, however, is what’s left of his body. He’ll use it as a wall between Enji and Shouto, he’ll feed Toga to help keep her safe, and he’ll keep cooking himself whenever he has to keep trying to help the victims of his father’s rule for as long as he possibly can. He knows his time is running out, his body is getting asymptotically closer to finally giving out.
