Summary
Eli Vanto, Karyn Faro and Jani Hammerly are but humble traders (smugglers) from the Mid-Rim. On one of the many occasions a trade deal (read: shady and risky business) gets way out of hand, they find themselves prisoners of a mysterious alien military force, with an even more mysterious Commander at its head.
A Commander who, for all intents and purposes, just likes to cause problems on purpose.

Eli couldn’t think of anywhere he would want to go less. Back to the Royal Academy maybe. Or Hoth.
“You could stay here and oversee repairs if you prefer,” Thrawn said.
He was giving Eli an out if he wanted one. But really, Eli knew he could hardly let Thrawn go to the creepy abandoned mine alone.
“I’d rather be with you sir,” Eli answered.
Thrawn smiled. “Then we had best make preparations.”

With growing confidence, Ezra did what he did best, found a weakness and dug his claws in.

Summary
Lieutenant Thrawn is interested in Ensign Vanto.
Ensign Vanto is not interested in developing inappropriate feelings for his superior officer and therefore has not examined the situation too closely.
Thrawn follows standard Chiss courting procedure: carefully engineered minor inconveniences, flawlessly resolved, in order to establish indispensability and long-term structural alignment.
This would work perfectly... if Eli were Chiss.
Instead, Eli begins responding unpredictably. So Thrawn concludes he must try harder. The Empire remains unaware that one of its most promising officers is engaged in a highly strategic, culturally misunderstood act of flirting.
