Having disappeared or run away—Anju did not know which theories to believe, not as she lay there and waited for the end. For wait was what she did. Staring out into the darkness, counting along to the heartbeats that marked the passage of time, she waited.
The certainty that came with knowing that the world would end, however, was also mirrored by the sound of footsteps, of Cremia walking into the room, and before she knew it, Anju was listening to her friend tell her what Anju would only realise far too late was a long kept secret.
