The thing was, Wei Ying wasn't always chaos in feline form. Most of the time he was a perfectly normal human, or at least, as normal as a werecat could be. As normal as anyone could be if they were forced to spend three nights every lunar month in a cat-shaped body.
And besides, it wasn't as though Wei Ying wanted to be a part time cat. He didn't. The moon nights were an inconvenience to be endured, and the rest of the time, he was as human as possible and that was that as far as he was concerned.
Meeting Lan Zhan in cat form was entirely accidental.

When their summer school at Cloud Recesses reaches its end, Jin Ling has a proposition for his friends: they should visit Lotus Pier. The only problem is how to get there; and the best solution is, of course, a road trip.
That, however, poses plenty more problems. The first is that Lan Zhan is unwilling to drive them, the second is that when he does agree, he wants to bring his suddenly reappeared childhood friend with them, and the third is that Lan Yuan doesn’t get along with his father anymore.
Lan Yuan is certain that the road trip will be a terrible experience, even with his friends there. He couldn’t be more wrong; the road trip will change everything for the better.

The client meets his gaze. “Um… I— Is it relevant?” he says. “For— for you to do the job, I mean.”
Lan Zhan doesn’t answer him, not immediately; for a moment, he watches the man squirm. He really wants to believe he’s not being scammed, not just because it would save him a ton of paperwork or because it wouldn’t be the first time — people seeking a cleaning job that is easier to explain and get away with, but then balking at the price and refusing to pay it, since it’s not just a clean up service —, but because this feels, still, a little weird.
He doesn’t seem to be lying, but Lan Zhan doesn’t think he’s getting the full truth.
So, he gives him a half-truth too, “Yes.”
“Um,” he repeats. “I’d say it’s been a few days. Three. Maybe five.”
Lan Zhan nods. He puts down his bag, starting to set up his things.

Wei Ying's stomach dropped to his toes. The feeling coursing through him was sickeningly familiar. In the Burial Mounds, he fought tooth and nail to keep the spirits out of his head. Whenever they'd get too close, his skin crawled, and it felt like he were a puppet being pulled along by strings. Now, a lighter, less malicious energy prodded him; it was gentle but not merciful. It reached its hand down his throat and stole words from his lips before he could think to stop it.
"Eighteen!"
