He wanted to pace. Stretch his legs a bit, use up the anxious energy bubbling up just beneath his cold skin.
He didn’t. Instead, he sat in the corner next to the door, hugging the wall and hoping enough of his body fit into the small blind spot of the cell’s window to hide him from any eyes that could try and look for him in the most unlikely of places.
(It wasn’t unlikely, had anybody listened to him. He didn’t exactly hide the fact the cage wasn’t meant for any of the vampires, even if it did end up housing one.)-------------

Summary
585 years. That's how long it had been since the war of Oakhurst waged. 585 years since Scott had lost someone who loved him unconditionally. 585 years since Scott lost someone who reminded him so much of a past lover.
585 years since he had murdered the people who had taken Avid away.
The year was 2025, and Scott was learning to live without attachments again. Something he thought he'd already mastered. That all stopped when during an outing with a dear friend and fledgling of his hear a laugh that makes Scott freeze.

Avid babbles something, probably a plea, as Owen pushes the stake down. He gasps, sobbing, as pain unlike anything he’s ever felt surges through his chest. It’s worse than dying, he knows dying, this is… this is…
Erasure.
“Stop- Stop!” Avid cries, but he knows it’s useless. It’s too late.
Owen just looks at him, with dark eyes, and the stake sinks through his chest.
And-
And…
There’s a voice, something distant and feminine. Powerful.
“It’s not your time. Not yet.”
And he’s gone.

Scott had been alive long enough for the map of his heart to have been redrawn a dozen times, cities rising and falling, fashions of cruelty and grace coming into and out of style. He had slept for six centuries and woken to centuries more, a library of names he did not keep. Love had always been a rumor he studied with clinical interest; attachment was tidy, transactional, brief. When he had cared, it had always been the kind of care that could be traded away.

Owen connects emotionally with Avid a bit more and backs out on the plan.‘Just a few more blocks and… Done!’ Owen exclaimed, starting to build the stairway out of this considerably deeper pit.
‘Are we going home now? Shelby was talking about making some board games to play.’ Avid says as he skips ahead
‘Yeah sure kid, we can go ho-’
‘PYRO!’
Avid turns around at that exclamation only to find a stake hanging above his heart, the hand holding it hing gripped tightly in place by Owen's own.

The grave before him was simple—too simple for what Avid had been. A rough stone marker, etched with hasty runes to ward off scavengers, and a scattering of wildflowers pilfered from the forest edge. Poppies, mostly. Avid had liked red, hadn’t he? Or was that just Scott’s imagination filling in the blanks?
He wasn’t dead. Not really. Vampires didn’t die like that—staked in some dirty betrayal, body dumped. Avid was… misplaced. Hiding, maybe. Playing one of his foolish pranks.

Legundo is trying his best. He really, truly is. But it seems that there's always something happening. When the militia dragged a bearly conscious vampire to town, that's when things started to go down.
Pyro fumbled. They blamed it on a mix of panic, paranoia and stupidity. And perhaps also the damm water. He had been captured and now they could do nothing but stare up at the celling courting stone tiles. Perhaps bothering the doctor and anyone else who tried to approach him.
Avid was turned. Lost among the chaos of taking in a prisoner he finds himself looking for any guidance he can get. Regardless where it comes from.
Or: Pyro was captured by the townsfolk and is slowly going crazy from boredom while trying to stay loyal to his sire, Legundo tries his best to learn about vampires and the cure all while trying to convince Pyro to switch to their side, all without realizing Avid is getting snatched right from under their noses and that he need help.

Avid hated looking at the scar upon his skin.
It ran along his neck and shoulders, festering with blood and infection, the edges jagged and uneven: clearly meant to be a quick, fatal blow with horrifying sharp claws- the insides pulsed with moving shoulder muscle underneath- visible in all of its agony, slowly leaking that same dark substance he had coughed up previously.
It never healed properly like a wound should. To him? It was vile and disgusting and inhuman. Like some sort of monster. It made him want to puke, to know he’s lived like this for so long.
He knew he was dying. That was a fact.
He felt it every day deep within his very core. The way he felt adrenaline and fear pump through him at the slightest noise, the constant anxiety over the worst to come, the way his once perfectly fitting clothes sagged on his limbs, and the way he felt his heartbeat get slower everyday.
It had gotten to a point where sometimes Avid couldn’t even feel his own pulse on certain days.
And it horrified him.
