Summary
The first thought that occurs to Crowley is that Aziraphale had not been joking when he said he loved books. The library is enormous, shelves upon shelves upon shelves filled to bursting with everything from shiny hardbound novels to musty tomes flaking with age. The air is pleasant with the lingering aroma of something that reminds Crowley very much of vanilla.
But there is another scent that is all too familiar to Crowley, a soft floral note he immediately recognizes, and another scent underlying it that is terribly out of place in this beautiful room – it is very faint, but unmistakable.
The putrid smell of rot.

Summary
It's 1914, and Aziraphale has come to German East Africa to help his brother Gabriel with his missionary work, fleeing both the possibility of persecution and the looming war. It's a far different life from the one he left behind, but Aziraphale can get used to anything. Except for one thorn in his side. Anthony Crowley, Captain of The Empress of Africa, the supply boat that comes once a month. Crowley is a boor, and Aziraphale wants nothing to do with him.
But then disaster strikes, and Aziraphale and Crowley find themselves going down the river on a desperate plan of Aziraphale's. It was easy enough to deny their feelings when they could be apart, but now that they have to spend every waking moment together, things won't be so easy.
Rapids, leeches, and feelings abound.

It was the dead of night now, and Anthony wandered barefoot through the orchard, lantern in hand and his faithful Alsatian, Bentley, loping at his heels. Moonlight filtered through the leafy canopy, casting everything in a dim, silvery glow. Soon the apples would be ripe for harvest, autumn bringing its comforting ritual of picking, pressing, filtering and fermenting. Anthony paused by a tree, running his fingers over the bark, and inhaled deeply the scent of wood, of grass and dew and the sweetness of night. The orchard had stood for generations, and here it was now, safe in his care. This was home. This was his sanctuary. Whatever came his way in life, this would always be here for him.
Anthony Crowley is a farm owner with an old injury, a prickly temper, and a young new farmhand to raise alongside his flock. Ezra Fell is a former Oxford scholar who retired far sooner than he would have liked, finding himself in the idyllic village of Taddesfild. After a tense first meeting, they soon discover they are more alike than different.

Once Bilbo arrives in the haunted stillness of Bag End, his chest aches to realize the house does not feel like a home anymore. His books are still there, his furniture is still there (once he hunts it down and returns it, dusty and fingerprinted, to its correct place.) But still, the feeling of pervasive strangeness remains. He at first chalks it up to having been empty: to a year of disuse, to odd scents filtering their way in and settling like cobwebs in the absence of his usual routine, tea and baking and the drying of herbs. Perhaps, once he begins these things again, it will not feel so cavernous, so lonely, so strangely and painfully bare, like a tree stripped of its leaves come winter.
But weeks pass, and nothing changes. So maybe it’s not the emptiness, but the fact (which he is trying his very hardest to dutifully ignore) that he left his heart behind to crystalize in the caverns of the Lonely Mountain.

Summary
While it's unfortunate for one’s car to break down in the middle of the countryside, the pretty-as-a-postcard Tadfield could hardly be considered the worst place Anthony J. Crowley has ever been. Of course, it doesn’t help that it looks like it hasn’t yet seen the turn of the millennia, let alone this decade, but perhaps that’s just what he needs as he crawls his way out of the Hell he’s endured for the past fifteen years. Maybe the last thirty, if he's honest with himself.
Though he could do without the rain.
When Aziraphale Fell happens upon him and offers him shelter from the storm in his little family-run antique repair shop, neither are expecting it to change everything. The angel with his white umbrella and his tartan bowtie doesn’t expect this mysterious stranger to be able to fill the timely vacancy in his shop or the quiet of his life, but they’ve both had experience in restoring once-beloved items back to their full glory.
Perhaps Crowley hasn’t fallen quite so far that he wouldn’t fit in with the rest of Aziraphale’s ragtag team of eccentric restoration experts. And perhaps they may be able to turn that talent on themselves and each other, and seal the cracks in their own hearts.
