This fic was written for the following prompt:
November 1963: A nationwide manhunt is underway for the man suspected of killing the president. But said man manages to evade the feds in his roundabout route to North Salem, New York – where he knocks on the door of a former friend, who only hesitates for a moment before he lets him in.
Charles (who here is long before the decline depicted in DOFP and is preparing to open the school) is deeply hurt seeing Erik again: he won't leave him to be captured, but he doesn't really want him in his house, either. Erik is torn between gratitude for the protection, anger over (in his view) being dumped by Charles, and guilt over Charles's accident. (Note: Accident aside, would love if this isn't framed around Charles "forgiving" Erik for his views or actions on the beach, as often happens in reconciliation fics. :-/)

Independent and alone, Erik has built up his own jewelry shop that has garnered success and great prestige throughout the city.
When the papers announce Charles' engagement, Erik isn't surprised to receive the commission to design the wedding rings even if it means seeing Charles again after years of avoiding him. But with Charles back in his life, Erik now has to come to terms with all of his old feelings returning in full force just in time to watch Charles be married off to someone else and be forever out of Erik's reach.

A Never Regrets 'verse sidestory for New Year's Eve. The last day of 1962 is uncomfortably warm in Peru. Erik brings champagne and a radio, and doesn't deserve Charles's courtesy. They want 1963 to be a good year, but they don't share the same definition of 'good'. Neither wants to fight the other, but they lost that chance somewhere in the final weeks of '62.

Charles has to be stopped, and stopping him is simple enough. He’ll understand, in time. That this is the only way to make him safe, to make them all safe. Even locked in a Peruvian safehouse, though, Charles knows that peace is the only answer.

Charles had to come. Charles was necessary. Charles wasn’t safe alone, was soft, not soft but smoothed, glowing, open, vulnerable to that sharp darkness that hid in the hands of men and Erik was an idiot to expect him to think straight in these circumstances, sweaty and sandy and clearly in pain on a bloody and still patchily burning beach with a bullet just out of his back.
That was easy, then. Erik could take care of this. He could take care of this for both of them, for now.

Erik had known Charles almost five days when they set out across the country together. They’d been on the road a week when Charles asked if he was attracted to men, already knowing the answer. It had been a week and a half on the road, ten days, when they’d started playing chess, an ugly plastic set Charles had bought in a store in a one store town.
It was more days than Erik was still counting when his senses stumbled over a glowing metal anomaly out near the walls of the Westchester estate; more days than it should have taken to realise that he was not the only one with long-buried secrets.
