Summary
Ratio notices Aventurine hasn't texted him back all day, something that feels incredibly out of character. For someone who lives wrapped in noise and spectacle, the absence of a message feels like a warning he does not yet understand.
Upon recieving a call from Topaz he decides to go check on him, hoping to find him busy with a meeting, complaining about his phone going missing or some elaborate inconvenience dressed up as a joke.
Instead, he finds a testament waiting on a spotless desk, instructions for a future without Aventurine and a single name written beneath every fortune: Dr. Veritas Ratio.

"Doc," he gasped out, squirming when Ratio's hands pinched at his nipple, his hand covering almost the entire expanse of his chest. "Ratio, slow down, I can't–"
"You can," Ratio nipped at his ear, dragging his tongue across the shell. "You're doing well, does it feel good?"
"I love you," Ratio said quietly; a confession, a promise, an oath. "You deserve all this, and more."
That was all it took to push Aventurine over the edge, crying out Ratio's name, shuddering through his release, tears spilling as he rode out his orgasm, as Ratio held him through it, peppering kisses along his face, kissing away his tears.
Aventurine choked on a sob, eyes fluttering open, his breath stuttering as he came back to his senses; the dampness on his hand, the tears that had slid from his eyes to the pillow, and the crumpled sheets under him.
Humiliating, Aventurine thought, as he shuffled out of his bed, stumbling to the bathroom to clean up the mess in his pants. How filthy, and disgusting, and perverted.

Sixteen days, thirteen minutes, forty-eight seconds since Aventurine arrived at his apartment for their bi-weekly briefing, consulting him about the hypothetical loopholes of his plan, stripping a lollipop open and leaving the wrapper on the cushion, sadly swept away seconds later by the breeze.
Sixteen days, thirteen minutes, fifty-five seconds since Aventurine slid the candy into his mouth, softly humming as he, too, was none the wiser to the thick silence that intruded their conversation. He darts his tongue out, lapping up the suspiciously phallic-shaped nicotine lollipop like it was a lifeline.
Sixteen days, fourteen minutes… Ratio clenches his fist around the throwpillow, nearly slamming it onto his lap to hide the very, very inappropriate reaction to his colleague sucking on a lollipop.
In an attempt to treat Aventurine’s destructive smoking habits, Ratio gives him a box of lollipops, assorted in shapes and flavors.
In this attempt, Ratio treads the path of his own destruction.

Veritas Ratio is a scholar. Not only that, but he is a doctor eight times over in different topics, and his eight Ph.Ds adorn his office wall. His vocabulary is wide and elegant, and his demeanour, while sometimes blunt and harsh, is professional.
He is, by no means, a degenerate of an Alpha.
Even his ruts are short-lived and tame, by his standards– and his scent is not incredibly overpowering. Although he does wear scent blockers, as he is a professional man, and not a degenerate Alpha controlled by his base desires who flaunts his pheromones in a desperate call for a mate. Trust him, he is not that type of person.
So why– why– is he so terribly, stupidly fixated on Aventurine’s waist?

Aventurine shudders when Ratio's mouth parts around his pulse. Like he expects Ratio to bite down, just like this. His breath hitches like he wishes Ratio would.
“Sometimes, I still think I can taste you,” he continues, emboldened by the tremor in Aventurine's breath. “As though the flavor of you never quite left my tongue.”
Aventurine blinks up at him, lashes half-lowered. His tongue flicks briefly across his lips before he smiles.
“Doctor,” he drawls, “if you wanted another taste, you could’ve just said so.”
The start of Aventurine's and Ratio's relationship—or whatever the nearest approximation of that might be—is promising. There is, in theory, potential for emotional intimacy and mutual understanding. In practice, however, Ratio’s fangs remain an inconvenient anatomical detail, one that consistently undermines any such progression.

For Veritas Ratio, the struggle to suppress his cravings during a trip to a distant planet is nothing less than burdensome. Overwhelmed by an insatiable hunger for blood and his long-suppressed desires, he finds himself at his limit when Aventurine proposes an experiment to both sate Ratios appetite and satisfy Aventurine’s curiosity.
