Katsuki can do nothing but blink up at them for moments that feel like an eternity, eyes darting between both his parents in obvious confusion, disbelief, and, more than anything, indignation.
"What the fuck are you two talking about? The damn nerd is standing right beside you!"During a battle, Midoriya gets hit by a villain whose quirk detaches his soul from his body. Stuck in a ghost-like state, the boy enters a race against time in order to save himself from permanently dying. Much to his luck - or lack of it -, the only person who can see and talk to him in this state is no one other than Kacchan.
Alternatively: Deku and Kacchan are soulbound.

Katsuki fucking hated it.

Izuku didn’t like the worried look on All Might’s face and quickly jumped into the story. He explained the troublesome villains and their quirks, being sure to leave out the hydrant part in case Bakugou got any ideas, and looked to his mentor for any advice.
“Kacchan and I can’t be more than 10 metres of each other, and the quirk has no time limit… What should we do? We can’t do hero work like this…”
“Why not?” It was the first thing All Might had said and Izuku honestly didn’t know how to answer “We can organise a team to locate and detain the villains while you both are assigned to duo missions. I think it will be especially beneficial for the ‘wonder duo’ considering it’s been a while, eh?”---
Basically, these idiots are stuck with each other and the bonding ensues.

Izuku laughs in disbelief. Hell would freeze over before he’d ever think that Kacchan would think he of all people was hot. The more he laughs though, the more aware he becomes of the fact that Katsuki is just… staring at him, like it wasn’t a joke. “That’s because there’s no way…” Slowly his laughter stops as his jaw falls open. “Wait… I’ve beaten you in a spar before… Does that mean…?”
“Unfortunately,” Katsuki snorts. He shrugs lightly, as if the casual admittance isn’t enough to cause Izuku’s heart to stop.
In which the Wonder Duo agrees to release the stress of being pro-heroes together and discover that sometimes being friends-with-benefits can mean being better friends.
