"I'll remember you as the boy who talked too much and died too young," Stebbins said. "I'll remember you as Gary Barkovitch, who wanted to be liked and settled for being feared, who loved a cat named Patty, who made one terrible joke and killed someone and couldn't forgive himself for it. Billy distracts himself by massaging his legs, wanting to make sure everything is warmed up. Someone will likely get taken out by a muscle cramp. Billy won’t be that person. He digs his fingers into his calves with a measured intensity, rubbing his thumb from the back of his heel all the way up to the back of his knee. He focuses on getting his body ready and mind in the right headspace. There’s just one issue.
He can feel the heavy weight of someone staring at him.
He lifts his gaze up back towards that group of people from before, the one with the guy eating the clementines and the other man with the cross necklace. They all seem invested in a conversation with the exception of the blond man to the far right.
He has haunted eyes.
