Summary
Frank huffed, setting the mug down. “How many times are we going to have to go over this, Mel? I like listening to you talk. I’m not just being nice. We’re friends.”
“It’s important to ask,” she said, still watching him carefully. “Because sometimes people say they want to know something but they don’t actually mean that they do. They’re just being polite. And it’s hard for me to tell that, always.”
“I’ll tell you what,” he suggested. “Let’s make this easy. With me, you never have to ask. Consider it my… blanket approval, I guess.”
He pointed to himself. “I, Frank Langdon, am interested in what you have to say.”

Summary
"Hey, Mel," he offered her, his voice weak. Mel tilted her head to one side. For just a moment, the shadows of the ambulance bay cast a darkness over his left eye like a bruise.
"Hey, Frankie," she whispered.
Frank Langdon looked down at his feet, shaking his head slowly. Mel found herself walking over to him before she had even decided to move. They stood alone, together in the silent bay.
"No one's called me that in… a very long time."
An alternate universe in which 12-year-old Melissa King meets a strange boy in the woods behind her home. Over the course of the carefree summer they spend together, the unlikely friends begin to realize that they needed one another more than they knew. When late August takes a dark turn and the two are separated, seemingly for good, it takes many years and a surprise reunion before the old friends fully understand just how much they changed one another's lives.

Summary
Maybe it’s the fever, or the endless months of solitary nights, or the way Mel’s looking at him, or maybe he’s just figuring out what he wants after losing so much—whatever it is, Langdon doesn’t have to think before he says, “Stay.”
Mel blinks at him, head tilted slightly.
“Even if it’s just until I’m asleep,” he amends. “I think it’ll make you feel better, and” —hesitating, Langdon musters one last mouthful of vulnerability— “I feel better with you here.”
A smile spreads across Mel’s face, and after a second’s hesitation, she puts her hand over Langdon’s. “I feel better being here,” she says, “although you’ll need to move over if I’m staying that long.”

Robby sends Langdon home sick from his shift; he ends up at Mel's place instead.

“Yes,” she says. “I can be very flexible.”
Frank chokes on his next breath, and she laughs. It’s her high-pitched laugh, almost a giggle. It comes out the most when she’s teasing him.
Joke, she mouths, away from the microphone. As if it’s just for him. As if she’s forgotten that Samira has a camera trained on their faces, capturing everything.

“Actually, did you— Did you make that?”
Sluggishly, Mel’s gaze drifts down to her still-shaky palm. She tilts her head at him, confusion twisting itself across her expression as she clarifies, “The… stethoscope—?”
“The costume, Mel,” Langdon laughs in a rush of air and reverence.

She watches him strut around headquarters, trying to look confident and purposeful as he searches for a reason to be there—orbiting Mel, while being quietly consumed by something she isn't sure he has the cojones to face.
Trinity sighs, weighing her vendetta against Mel's happiness. She really is getting a martyr complex, just like the rest of these sick fucks.

“Hey, Becca,” Frank begins, “can I ask you something?”
“Sure." He can hear the distinctive sound of her phone screen locking. "What’s up?”
“Do you remember the first time we met?”
“Of course I remember.” Still in the rearview mirror, he sees her frowning. “My stomach hurt really bad.”
“Right, yeah.” Maybe not the happiest memory to remind her of, but he already knows how he’s going to distract her, so he pushes forward. “Uh, do you remember when you said that your - that Mel said a lot of nice things about me?”
“Duh,” she replies. “She still says nice things about you. All the time.”
Jackpot. He chews on the inside cheek to stop himself from grinning like an idiot. “Yeah? … Like what?”

“What do we get at Healthcare Heroes Night? A raise?”
“A free lunch box.”
“Oh boy,” Dana laughs as she squeezes. It’s a cadence that Frank recognizes - the kind of dark humor that has you laughing to keep from crying. “Between that and the free Dominos left over from the night shift, it almost makes getting socked in the face worth it.”;

Summary
“What’s up with you and Langdon?” Samira asked as they charted at central later in the day. Mel, who had been laying with her forehead against the cool table, shot up at the comment.
“What do you mean?” Mel had never been able to hide her affection for Dr. Langdon. The two of them just seemed to click in a way she didn’t with her other co-workers. But she had been careful to keep the professional boundary between them, especially once she found out from Princess and Perlah that he had been officially divorced.
Samira glanced between Mel and Langdon, who was speaking with the parent of a patient outside of one of the rooms. “He’s been watching you like a hawk all day. It’s weird.”
“He’s just worried,” Mel said, relaxing a bit. “He thinks I’m getting sick.”
Samira huffed. “He didn’t really care when Whitaker was sick two weeks ago. But then again, he’s not attached at the hip to Whitaker like he is with you.”

Summary
Before she could speak, Dana was sending him off to whatever patient was in Central 10, and looking at her from under her glasses. Mel turned, placing her hands on the nurses station in front of her, awaiting orders.
“Where’re you two going ?” She asked, instead.
“New York !” Mel chirped, “For the Renfaire,”
“You’re staying the weekend together ?” Dana asked. Mel nodded. “That’s sweet.” She said. There was something in Dana’s tone of voice, Mel wasn’t sure exactly what she was implying, but there were implications.
