Summary
It was the normalcy that made it worse.
Pittfest was a fresh, festering wound in the collective consciousness of the city, yet to step inside the Pitt was to step into the mundane. The distance necessary to process such a disaster cast aside in favor of the bloodied, suffering trauma of everyday life. The bodies of the six people they couldn’t save weren’t even cold before it was opening its doors to the injured and infirm. People rushing back to the waiting room as though they had never left. Ambulances carrying in patients one by one instead of en masse.
Which was to be expected. But Christ did Robby need something to be different. Anything other than himself.

The text—a brief, to the point ‘threw my back out’—couldn’t have prepared him for the sight that greeted him when he pulled up to Robby’s townhouse. ‘Threw my back out’ meant ‘I haven’t been able to move for an unknown amount of time and this is as close as I can bring myself to ask for help’. The text said, without saying, ‘if I called you might hear the pain in my voice and worry’ and God forbid anyone ever worry about Michael Robinavitch—as if Jack had done anything else in the weeks since Pittfest. But frowning at the sight before him as he got out of his truck, Jack wondered if he’d been worrying enough.

In the workplace, particularly for those who work at a hospital, a person’s secondary gender has no place. They are supposed to act like they don’t exist, but the system isn’t perfect. Medical students of the same status often butt heads. Some asshole alphas try to act superior.
In order to prevent this, doctors wear scent blockers while on shift. It isn’t foolproof, but it’s vital to ensuring that someone’s presentation or scent doesn’t cause any issues.
Or, Michael Robinavitch and Jack Abbot realize what the other smells like and try to avoid the elephant in the room for as long as possible.

He’s a real person, a real boy laying in Clark’s bed, safe and sound, here in Smallville where nothing and nobody will hurt him.
Not as long as Clark’s nearby anyway.
Clark longs to reach out and touch him, there on his cheek. He longs to run his knuckles over the softness of it ever so slowly, so he can truly feel the heat of his skin, and have that heat transferred over to his own body.
