Clarion had been braced for all types of challenges now that she finally had Milori back. Even though this was supposed to be the easy part. Even though their love was no longer doomed to end at nightfall. Even though they’d bridged the border. She wasn’t naïve enough to think it would be easy, not in a land of magical freezes and sentient trees and divisions that ran so deep.
Clarion, who was so used to losing people, hadn’t realized that getting them back also meant having to confront who she had become in their absence.

For James Barnes, former brainwashed HYDRA assassin and the world’s longest serving POW, waking up in pain is not unfamiliar. But waking to suffocating smoke, a dozen stinging slices across his skin from flying debris, and now someone shoving him in the sternum with a rifle barrel? Those are a little more unusual.
Add to that the fun fact that he can’t see or hear anything at all...Well, that's definitely new.

There’s a beat and then Phil says, “Clint, you don’t have anything to prove.”
And that stings, because, “If you think I’m doing this to prove anything to anyone, then you don’t know me half as well as I thought you did.” He hears Phil sigh on the other end of the comm. “Besides,” Clint tells him, “I’ll have back-up. I’ll have Barnes. Hawkeye out.” He reaches up and clicks off the comm, cutting off Phil’s continued objection mid-word.
Eight days these assholes have had Barnes and he’s not going to let them keep him for another hour, much less another day. He doesn’t have anything to prove, but he sure as hell isn’t going to give anyone any reason to question his actions, either.

I’d really prefer if you didn’t shoot me, thanks.” The archer stood, popped his knees and strode purposefully into the glade of HYDRA bodies and scorched grass, his shoulders relaxing when no bullet met his head.
“Thanks. You wanna come out too? I've got no arrow in my bow; I'm not gonna try anything.” Nothing moved aside from the delicate swaying of bushes and branches from the wind – then someone carefully emerged from the pines, and Clint subconsciously tightened his grip on his bow."
(Or, while Clint is raiding a HYDRA camp, he stumbles into Bucky and convinces the man to travel around the country with him to destroy the last remnants of the organisation.
Everything else along the way was a surprise, though).
