Hardwick splutters, like a laugh got stuck in the back of the throat. It's a hollow sound, something that reminds Gurney of a hyena, of the animal's wicked grin and laugh-like sounds. But Hardwick is no hyena, just a man. A mortal man well capable of dying, and admitting this fact has broken the very foundations of Gurney's world.

“Flambeau,” Father Brown’s brain was still struggling to catch up with everything that had happened over the past few days, let alone with the fact that Hercule Flambeau was currently inches away from him, unbuttoning his shirt. “Flambeau, you have a wife.”
Flambeau gave a grin and a roguish wink. “I won’t tell her if you won’t, Father,” he quipped blithely.
(Basically just a shameless smutty scene inserted into the middle of The Two Deaths of Hercule Flambeau. It's what they deserve.)

Gheorghe settles back into life on the farm like he never left, filling up the gaps that were left in his absence with cheese made of sheep’s milk, smiles, laughter and words whispered in Romanian in the dead of night when he and Johnny are tucked up together in the small single bed. After the caravan, it’s the next thing to go, replaced with a double bed that fills up the space in Johnny’s room but doesn’t make them sleep any further apart at night.
