As the comb slowed down, Rangi did too. “But you’re not the only one she takes after,” she whispered, “You’ll see it for yourself soon enough, but she’s been strutting around like she was born into the Fire Nation military. Hands behind her back, chin high, questioning every poor servant who happens to pass by the yard about snacks and interrupting every station guard to comment on their posture. The other day,” she paused for a long moment, “I called her ‘Lieutenant’, just to tease her. She liked it enough to make it her official title.”
Kyoshi’s brows rose slightly, though she kept her eyes on Koko’s sleeping face. In her rest, she stirred slightly, her mouth curling at a dream, fingers clenched. There was a wet spot on Kyoshi’s robe right where she was sleeping. “Lieutenant, is it?” she whispered, brushing some hair out of her face, her thumb faintly tracing the line of her eyebrows.

Rangi just stared, that was the weakest attempt of a lie she’d heard in ages.
“I’ll tell you soon okay? I’m working on something.”
That at least was the truth, though it did nothing to stop Rangi’s curiosity. Kyoshi was flushed, but there was an excited air about her. Rarely did she plan something to this degree, so Rangi would let her have it. For now.

The janitorial closet by the gym: that’s where Rangi had to be. Kyoshi grimaced at the thought of running across Yokoya High School, but Rangi needed her, and Kyoshi would do anything for Rangi.
Quietly, from inside, she heard a muffled noise that vaguely resembled the words ‘come in.’ And so, Kyoshi opened the door. Light briefly flooded the tiny space before Kyoshi’s shadow engulfed it. But it was enough to reveal who sat inside.
There, curled up on the floor and leaning against a dusty shelving unit, was Rangi. Her beautiful, talented, fiery Rangi. Except she certainly didn’t exude the same energy that earned her the latter adjective of being ‘fiery.’

It’s beautiful.
Kyoshi has heard good musicians. Yun is a fantastic violist, the youngest in the top orchestra and with an iconic bright tone on his A string, but this A sounds like crystal. It rings brilliantly, crisp and clean, and if Kyoshi could only listen to one thing for the rest of her life, it would be this A.
(String ensemble AU, where Kyoshi is the leading violist and Rangi is the harpist who's been brought in to accompany.)
