Dean keeps going back.
When he arrives, it's always to blooming flowers and a windmill in the background, not too far from a brook, the sun painting the plains.
He likes it there. He likes to stand in front of the makeshift urn and check that it's still where he put it, switching out the flowers when they wilt. He likes to listen to the sound of birds chirping, insects singing, the faint sound of water trickling in the distance. He likes to turn his face up and feel the sun on his skin, wondering if Cas would do the same if he were here, somehow knowing that he would.
He likes to talk.
There's never a response, but Dean feels the breeze rustle through his hair and watches the flowers bob when bees come to them and stares as the windmill keeps turning, turning, turning. And he imagines that Cas is replying—the windmill is the tilted head, the bobbing flowers are a gentle smile, the breeze is whatever words Dean wants to hear at the time.
Sometimes, it's almost like he's there.

It's not that Soren begrudges them needing a dad in the first place. Kids are supposed to have someone to, like, nag them. To care enough to nag them. To make dorky jokes for them to be annoyed by, and be someone they can talk to if they want (and maybe sometimes if they don't). And to be proud of them and their kingliness and elven sneakery and magic magehood.
It's more that he doesn't have the training the job really demands! The background experience. There must have been a time that Viren was a good dad and not just a disappointed and distant one—it wouldn't have been so hard to part ways with him, otherwise—it's just too far back for Soren to draw on now.
But you can't choose your family. You get stuck with them and then you just do your best by them. The last time around, Soren suspects, maybe his best should have been better.

Master Jinn meets the eye of this child in silence and then, he kneels. Before Obi-Wan, he kneels. And yet, Obi-Wan, bandaged and misshaped by heavy, inflexible cloth, does not go to him. He lowers his blanket-hooded face to the ground and stares there. Tired.
Anakin’s master has never seemed so far gone. He looks but does not see. Master Jinn carefully brings his hand up and cups Obi-Wan’s young cheeks and chin. He looks into those eyes now and they say nothing to each other.
(Anakin and Ahsoka witness the reunion of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in the aftermath of Melida/Daan. It isn't pretty.)

They dance together in his nursery, although Marya does most of the dancing. At just days old, Wylan is too small for anything more than the soft squirming against her chest. That’s all right though. Marya hums a song in his little ear, a lullaby her mother sang to her and her grandmother sang to her mother. She rocks him gently, carefully, cradling him like the most precious cargo there is. As she turns slowly on her tiptoes, Wylan’s sleepy eyes take in the dimly-lit scene of his nursery; the mural of stars painted on the wall, the shadows cast by the nightlamp’s glow. This is his whole world; all he knows are these walls and the music in his ear and the tight hold his mother has as they dance. This is what safe means.
