Wylan lets his children finger paint and doesn’t scold them if colors find their ways onto walls or floors. He lets them dig holes in the barely there strip of grass behind the house, planted simply so that his father could claim they had a lawn. He lets them run and scream and have the life he never had, too hemmed in by a strange soup of sorrow and fear, pulling his own head underwater for the crime of existing.

Summary
They’re kind of in the thick of the shit when the truth of Wylan’s identity comes out. No one really asks any questions, just takes the information at face value and moves along.
One of Wylan’s first nights in the barrel, a street merchant had laughed at Wylan as he stopped to offer a girl with messy hair and dirt smeared across her face half of the loaf of bread he’d just purchased. As he’d stooped down to offer it to her and check her over for injuries, her twin brother had bustled behind him, looting the rest of the measly krudge from Wylan’s pocket. When he’d crossed the street to the merchant to buy some fruit the merchant had chuffed he didn't have any krudge to offer. Wylan frantically searched his pocket only to come up empty handed.
“You gotta assume the worst about everyone in the barrel kid. ‘Cause you gotta be at your worst to end up in the dirty barrel.” The merchant offered him a dropped and bruised apple and sent him to scurry off. The kids have taken the money he’d been carrying to pay for his boarding for the week.
Or, the five times the crows are mean to Wylan after finding out his true identity, and the one time they try to make it up to him.

Which leaves the escaped convict ex-drüskelle in shackles, grappling with the guilt of betraying his country, who also hates them all. And somehow, he and Wylan get to talking about God.

So Jesper had explained the whole story, of how every time he thinks of marriage he accidentally uses his powers to make a ring, and how Wylan doesn’t know any of this, and how until one of them proposed to the other, Jesper was simply doomed to accidentally make every metal object in his range an engagement ring because he wanted to marry Wylan so badly it was a little insane.
“I think this is an extremely easily avoidable problem, Jesper,” Nina tells him, rolling her eyes and Matthias nods in agreement. Jesper was on the floor of the Slat, and he made no attempt to stand up. “Just propose to him.”

Jesper blinks, just a little. He's been spending all his time in the club, sometimes leaving to wander into one down the street, or stealing a few hours of sleep in the corner. "I'm not -"
"As I thought," Kaz says. "Come with me."
He follows Kaz, and that blistering feeling of recognition, out the door and down streets that somehow feel familiar, even though he doesn't remember having seen them before.

If Jesper hadn’t been a curious boy once, splitting each stem to understand how each flower bloomed beneath his mother’s touch – before grief had turned question into longing, and longing into restlessness.
