When his mom asked, Foggy said "quiet." His sister got told "fucking bizarre" and his brother "weirdly intimidating." If anybody in class asked, Foggy got weirdly protective and just said that Matt was a good roommate.
But he was weird. In and out at random times, always coming back looking like he’d been in a dog fight on the way back. Always saying something weird and random and completely accurate that he had no business knowing. Tilting his head like he was listening to something nobody else could hear, and smiling in that weirdly creepy way of his, like he knew something nobody else did and was about to use it to his own advantage. It was obvious that Matt was smart. They had a couple of classes together and every time he started talking, everyone in the room listened, and he was right. When people were around, he was cocky and over the top and confident, and when people weren’t, he was stoic and quiet.

It's not too far fetched to believe the Devil walks Hell's Kitchen.
Matt, on the other hand, hasn't realised exactly why his new battle buddies seem terrified of him. It's not like they've even heard the rumors about him being the Devil... right?

“What are we doing here, mom?” Thalia asks as she helps Jason out of the car.
“Camping,” the lady says blithely.
They finally make it to a big clearing with lots of stone picnic tables and families eating. There’s a big empty house with no roof and half of its walls missing and Jason wants to go inside. He wanders towards it, but Thalia grabs his hand to pull him to a stop. He pouts up at her and points at the house. “Inside.”
Thalia shakes her head and backs away from it. “No, Jason, we’re not going in there. It’s creepy.”
Jason wants to disagree with her. But Thalia looks scared, and Thalia never looks scared, so he decides to explore the house later.
“Thalia.” They both turn to see the lady standing behind them, holding out her ring of keys. “I forgot to get the cooler. Go get it.”
Thalia scoffs and rolls tugs at Jason’s hand. “Come on. We gotta get the food.”
Jason only makes it a couple steps before the lady grabs him under the arms, yanking him away from Thalia. Jason frowns but doesn’t complain.
“You go on by yourself,” the lady says. “You’ll be quicker if you go alone, and I can take care of Jason.”

This fic explores that; mainly guilt, the idea of what you "should be," and most importantly, a Piper insistent in her way of trying to brighten his day. And, of course, a little bit of loving someone like the world (but 'failing' because it's not the type of love it's expected to be).
