Summary
Hob is sleep deprived. That's fine, it happens, he's used to it. It's just that when you're 600-something the centuries can start to blend together a bit when you're tired. Enough so, apparently, that when Dream pops by for a visit, Hob's muddled brain decides to greet him with a "Salve!" and a kiss on the lips like it's still 1389 and he's greeting any old friend and not the cosmic being he's secretly in love with in the year of our Lord 2023. It's a good thing Dream is understanding. Very understanding.

Hob goes on to explain how much fun he’d had in gliders between the two wars, and how he’d been a pilot again during World War 2. He describes the race to space, and how it had really wrenched his heart that he could not take part in it. It would have been way too dangerous for his anonymity.
“And that’s why, when the 21st century started, I decided I wanted to understand how it worked. I got a degree in aeronautics, and before I knew it I was in the middle of a PhD. That’s how I became a physicist.”
“I remember recruiting two physicists in 1909, to work for me," Dream says pensively. “Henri Bénard and Theodore von Kármán.”
Hob’s eyebrows lifts.
“You had a bit of a vortex problem?”---
Or, Hob decided to study aerodynamics, and uses his knowledge to investigate the phenomenon of the dream vortex. And falls in love in the process.

So, just because this is the kind of woman Johanna Constantine is, she makes up the most absurd names she can think of to address Hob by when she is taking the piss out of him. Anything that even vaguely has the syllables or cadence of ‘Robert Gadling’. She has been going for five years straight now and not repeated a one. Proud of that record, she is.

Hob understands now both why Dream created this nightmare, as well as why doing so was an unconscious rather than conscious act, and the thought hurts more than the nightmare itself. After all, Hob has had four hundred years to grapple with his own loss. He's not sure that, even after so much time, Dream has grappled with his.

And there was the preening, subtle though it was. An elegant eyebrow twitched upward as at some amusement. “You would fashion me in your debt, Hob Gadling?”
“Nah. I’d see you Tuesday.”
A beat passed filled with genuine consideration, enough to make Hob’s heart leap, his weight shifting forward in his seat. “Tuesday, then.”

No. That was the wrong way of thinking about it, of course. The end of the world. The world was thriving. Coyotes had reached all around the Hudson Bay for Christ’s sake! Their screeching howls punctured the night. Mosquito clouds had blown clear up to the North Pole, though thankfully the modified, disease-resistant ones had beaten out the old species. Thank god for ancient technology.
The world wasn’t ending by a long shot.
It was just people who were ending.

Johanna does a few jobs for Dream when she needs to lie low. She preferred the detective hunts and the exorcisms; having her skills as a master occultist used to give potluck recommendations felt like employee abuse.
