I’m here to train you, to teach you how to fight, be your mentor. That’s what you should be focusing on. Not... learning about me.” His tone wasn’t sharp; he wasn’t trying to wound. But it needed to be said.
Bob, however, didn’t back down. “Sure. But why can’t we do both? Why can’t we be both?”
John shook his head, frustration tightening his chest. “You know social expectations and rules better than I do. You know this wouldn’t be acceptable.”
“And you know I don’t care about them,” Bob shot back without hesitation. “So why are you being so difficult?”

John never thought of himself as talented.
Growing up in rural Georgia, there wasn't much around but the school and the Chevron gas station up a few miles from his house that he would park his dad's old two-seater truck at and squint at who was working the counter through the window before heading inside. His buddy, Shawn, wouldn't ID him for the Kodiak dip if he paid in cash and let the guy take a few dollars off the top.
His high school wasn't anything special either. Mostly outdoor and the majority of funding going towards the football field— not that he ever cared as he was the captain of the football team anyways. He was always fascinated during the shows the band did halfway through the games. The loud instruments, the formations, the flying flags, even the uniforms had him curious.
John's father told him once that he would rather have a pathetic football player son than a faggot trumpet player one. He never brought up joining the school's band again.or,

Summary
Yeah, maybe John doesn’t look like Steve. But from behind, when he sits pressed against Bob, the scene looks a little too familiar. Familiar enough that Bucky needs to blink repeatedly and get up to go to his room before it gets too much.
They aren’t him and Steve. They simply aren’t. Yet Bucky feels his stomach churn.
Maybe it’s the fact that Bucky understands Bob— that he understands what it feels like to be turned into a weapon against your will, only to be valued if you obey the orders. Maybe it’s simply that he still isn’t over how familiar John looks when he stands under the right lighting. But at that moment, he decides to pay attention, even if from afar, to make sure Bob doesn’t get hurt, to make sure that he doesn’t get left behind after trusting too much.

5 times Bucky watches John and Bob grow closer and feels protective over Bob. And 1 time he realizes that he got it all wrong.
