Miorine has sat there, hour after endless hour, fingers knitted together, unfocused eyes drifting to the black of space that does not betray how many days have passed. When she was out there in the depths, in the endless dark beyond the glass and steel that protects them from its thoughtless wrath, she had been so certain it was all for nothing. The glass of Suletta’s helmet was clouded, the oxygen no longer circulating as it should, and she had not responded no matter how Miorine screamed and shook her.
Miorine’s heart had not broken because it could not beat. Not until Suletta whimpered, twitched, mumbled through parted lips, and now all Miorine hears is the drumming of her own pulse in her ears.
Suletta’s eyes haven’t flickered open since.

Camila is not a stupid woman.
She sees it, is the thing; the way Amity acts around Luz. The difference in their interactions. Amity is stifling and awkward around Camila, quiet and snarky around the others, but with Luz, she’s almost achingly soft, constantly touching her in some way. She winds her fingers around Luz’s arm and pulls her into hugs whenever Luz is looking particularly down, bumps their heads together as if she’s trying to share the pain. Hell, just the way she looks at Luz makes Camila’s heart seize.
She knows that look, and even if she hadn’t seen it firsthand for (too many) years ago, it’d still be recognizable. Luz shares it, is the real kicker. When she looks back at Amity.
So, Camila… wonders.
