“Shauna’s dead in your world, and you’re alive,” Misty bulldozed over her stuttering. “Yet here you’re dead, and Shauna’s alive.”
Her breath left her body, eyes unfocusing as the realization began thrumming through her veins. The idea had been there, obviously, that she’d woken up in some parallel world to her own. Shauna’s ghost visage, who’d yet to reappear, said as much in her own cryptic way. She was evidently supposed to see Shauna again, which she thought meant she was about to die.
And maybe she did.
Her hand came up to her chest, feeling for her own heartbeat. It was there, steady and clear. Wherever she was, Jackie Taylor was alive, and whatever world she’d been zapped into had a living, breathing Shauna.

Summary
Begrudgingly waking up, Jackie let out a yawn, yet it didn’t feel the same as the typical morning yawn. It didn’t even sound like a typical yawn. It sounded more like a meow.
Jackie opened her eyes as she took in her surroundings. Her room seemed completely normal, and there wasn’t a sign of a cat anywhere. She tried to push herself upwards to get a better view, but the change was insignificant.
No way.
Slowly, the girl looked down at her body, expecting to see her stomach and chest, but instead was greeted with white fur.

Jackie plus Shauna.
She knows it's corny. But she can’t help herself anymore. Not with this gnawing feeling inside her chest. Not when the phantom sensation of Shauna's touch on her wrist is burned into her memory.
“What are you doing?”
Jackie jumps in surprise. The paper slips from her lap and gently floats to the ground, landing face up in front of Shauna.
Jackie sighs in relief. “Oh. It’s you.”

Jackie never meant to confess – especially not like that. But Shauna sees more than she was supposed to, misunderstands it completely, and lashes out. Now Jackie’s hurt, trying desperately to fix what she broke, while Shauna stays angry for all the wrong reasons.

The years pass, and Jackie and Shauna find themselves living in New Jersey as neighbours, with different spouses and similar sadness. One a soccer coach for the same team she once won Nationals with, and the other as a forgotten stay-at-home wife with a frustrated dream of becoming a writer. They pretend everything is okay, continuing the charade for the sake of their own mental health, until Shauna starts to suspect Jeff is cheating on her. It all goes downhill from there.
