“I’m fine,” Darry mutters again, but it’s even more hollow now, more useless. Soda’s still crouched at his other side, one hand steady on Darry’s wrist like he’s grounding him there.
“No, you’re not,” Pony says, but there’s no judgment in it. Just truth. “And that’s okay.”
Darry lets out a breath that sounds almost like a laugh, except it’s broken in half. He drags both hands down his face and then presses his palms into the edge of the table like he needs something to hold on to. “I ain’t ‘sposed to fall apart. Not in front of you two.”
“Why not?” Pony asks. “We fall apart in front of you all the time.”

A month and a half after the funeral, Darry’s doing his best to hold everything together. But the broken pipe, the long days, and one sharp argument with Ponyboy push him past his limit. When he breaks down in the kitchen, it’s his brothers who help him — quiet, steady, and refusing to leave. It still hurts. But they’re in it together.

The fact that Two-bit is standing in the office when he gets there does absolutely nothing to clear up the situation. Two-bit graduated-by the skin of his teeth, no less- last year. Two-bit is not supposed to be here. It certainly doesn’t help that Two-bit's mouth is pressed into a straight line instead of his usual dopey grin, and his eyes are dark and serious when he looks at Ponyboy.
“Soda sent me.” He explains, his voice uncharacteristically sedate “Something happened to Darry.”

“Can we go get him?” Sodapop asked, pushing himself back to his knees as he put his hands on the couch. Even Darry had found himself wanting to go find Sodapop’s best friend so that they could do this ‘planned activity’.
“I’ll go with him,” Darry offered before their mom could refuse Sodapop his request. “We can go get Steve and come back, we’ll be really fast!” Darry added, eyes darting towards their father hopefully. Both Curtis parents were thoughtful.
“I suppose,” Their dad spoke, smiling as both Darry and Sodapop brightened up. Ponyboy had started getting fussy, and was beginning to cry and kick his feet like he did when he had headaches. “There wouldn’t be any harm in them going to get Steve. Darry can handle his brother on a walk, Sharon.”
“Oh, alright. Go, but be fast.” Their mother smiled, brushing Pony’s hair back as he looked up at her with tears streaming down his face. “Oh, let’s get you some headache medicine, yeah?” Darry didn’t know what she did after that. He and Sodapop had just been excited to be able to go on this walk by themselves.
