Darry knew he shouldn’t pry, but there’s been something up with his brother. He knows he shouldn’t, but he’d rather check and be able to help than stand by and watch.
He walked over to the desk and sat down. He read the words at the top of the page. This was for his theme in English class. Darry had seen them criteria paper and Ponyboy had been clueless as to what he’s supposed to write about that sends a message and has clear plot points. Ponyboy usually felt more passionate about writing fiction, he wasn’t good at dealing with reality. So, Darry told him to take something small and exaggerate it, he just didn’t expect this.--
Or:Darry reads Ponyboy's theme, but most of it never actually happened and needless to say he's concerned. Oh and everyone in the gang are biologically Curtis brothers.

Stupid Soc boy Paul Holden.
His nemesis has a couple of loose attempts at what’s clearly his big brother’s face and stature — something even Ponyboy himself can’t pull off yet, but they look just like Darry. The sort of sunken-in set of his eyes, and the little half-smile he does when he’s real happy, the way his jaw has squared out the last year or so, a bit of darker shading on his chin to represent what he shaves off every morning next to Dad in the bathroom. There’s so much care put into how these sketches look, clearly, ‘cause they’re the softest drawings on the spread, gosh, they look like love, and it makes Pony subconsciously smile a little before he realizes what he’s doing.

Pony didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Just stayed curled up, facing the wall.
“Pony, please,” Soda said again, and now there was a crack in it. Real worry. “Me and Dar, we’re scared. I miss you, honey.”
The words hit him harder than the bruises ever could.
A hand slipped gently into his hair, brushing it back the way it always used to. Pony swallowed, hard.
“‘M okay, Soda,” he mumbled. His voice was thin, frayed at the edges. “It’s okay.”
“It’s not,” Soda said softly. “You look like you’re fading away.”

When a group of Socs corner Ponyboy and beat him up, they don’t just leave bruises — they leave doubts. Doubts about whether he really belongs with Darry and Sodapop. Doubts about whether he’s anything more than a stray they took pity on. Afraid to be a burden, Pony begins to pull away from the only real family he’s ever known. "What... Why would you go and do that? Are you looking to get arrested? Or killed?" He whispered, his face wearing a look that said "are you ridiculous?", but to his credit, his voice stayed quiet.
"You were there that first morning, Johnny, you know how Soda looked. I'm not just gonna sit on the couch while the rest of y'all are fighting, I'm sick of it. I'd set their houses on fire if I could.""
