The young acolyte learns three things about Astarion very quickly.
Firstly, he’s not a cleric—if there’s such a thing as the opposite of a cleric, Astarion is probably that.
Secondly, he knows a startling number of Ilmatari clerics anyway. He claims Brother Kycus owes him money.
Thirdly, and perhaps most pertinently, he knows how to pick a lock.
“That’s the value of an independent contractor,” he says breezily, tinkering with a back-alley door. “Your Revered Mother is a practical sort. Likes to use the tools she has.”

Sul crams in beside the window to make room for Astarion, who hops off his bed and shoots over to join them. She can mostly make out the shadow of three and a half horns pushing to and fro with what looks like vigorous kissing.
“Well.” Astarion rests his face in both hands, lips pulled up to show his fangs. “Good for her.”

It’s almost hilariously ironic that Wayne is saying this here, in Clark’s place of employment, where Clark works ten-hour shifts to earn enough tip money to pay rent on a one-bedroom apartment.
“He’s gotta live somewhere,” Clark points out.
Or: Clark meets Bruce, and then Superman meets Bruce Wayne. Neither is entirely fooled.

The staff meeting after Cat had broken her foot had involved a lot of reassigning, since she couldn’t exactly do the usual society beat with her foot in a boot. So much that Clark hadn’t really thought twice when Perry had said “and Kent, you’ll take the new Wayne foundation piece,” because sure, he liked working the philanthropy stories occasionally. It wasn’t until they’d gotten back to their desks that Lois had burst into a fit of snickering and said “oh, I would pay money to see how you’re going to handle Bruce Wayne for two weeks,” and Clark had realized how majorly screwed he was.

(Or: in a universe where Krypton took an extra thirty-odd years to implode, Kal-El was sent to Earth as an adult, in advance of the ship containing the only other surviving Kryptonians; and a quirk of Kryptonian law means negotiating refuge, potential resettlement, and an alliance with the Kryptonians in general is dependent on marriage between a Kryptonian and a human. Bruce did what it took to make sure that that human would be him, instead of some poor unprepared civilian—but his efforts to learn more about the aliens, what they want and why they're here, and how, if necessary, to kill them ... don't go the way he's expecting them to.)
