Summary
Ruoye abandons his play and bolts to Xie Lian’s side, his eyes wide and his ears pricked: the boy smells like blood and disease, but he clings to Xie Lian with startling strength. Ruoye searches for the boy’s daemon, eager to check that it is safe after such a fall. He finds nothing.
Even when Xie Lian carries the boy back to the palace, no daemon shows itself. Ruoye can’t smell one on him, either; he will not understand why until weeks later, when ghosts flood to Taicang Mountain. He hears the whispers, then: the boy is cursed, daemonless, a freak and a monster and a creature best left for dead.

The person – the woman – in the doorway had one hand lazily placed on the doorframe and another gripping a steaming portable cup of coffee. She pulled her free hand through messy brunette hair that fell past slim shoulders, and yawned. “Sorry, keep talking.”
Adora couldn’t. Her previous flow was cut off by the presence in front of her. Thoughts of synergy flew out the window and were instead replaced by other information. For example; this woman did not wear trousers but instead a very tight, fitted, pencil skirt with a slit drawn up to her thigh. She sauntered past Adora and slumped in the empty chair next to her. From new proximity Adora added caffeine, Chanel, and cigarettes to her memory bank under the title: late brunette.

“Guilty,” Adora said, cringing a little. “Sorry. I thought Glimmer told you.”
“I’m gonna fucking kill her.” Catra shook her head, trying to wipe the stunned expression off her face. “I can’t believe she set me up on a blind date with a goddamn millionaire.”
“Yeah,” Adora said awkwardly. “Oops.”
“It’s—” Catra shook her head. “Okay, Glimmer aside, how would you paying for my tuition even work? I mean, we—we’ve only been on one date, and it’s not even over yet.”
“It’s a crazy idea,” Adora said. “I know. Just—just forget I said anything.”
Maybe it was the buzz of alcohol, or maybe it was the shock of finding out she was on a blind date with a rich person, but Catra couldn’t stop herself from blurting, “Well, I didn’t say no.”
A beat.
Adora blinked, looking up at her. “What?”
Or: Catra is a physics PhD student struggling to balance life, work, and loans. When her friend sets her up on a blind date, she doesn't expect it to be with the most attractive millionaire she's ever seen. They work out an arrangement.

Or, six years ago, Adora and Catra were college students in love. Then, in one fateful meeting at a coffee shop, Adora broke Catra's heart.
Now Catra's a junior partner at a law firm handling a patent dispute for Adora's family company. The two of them have to re-enter the other's life in an attempt for closure, catharsis, and connection.

She's made a place for herself there and everything is going great when she lands one of the lead roles of their newest play - until she shows up to the first rehearsal and the person cast in the role of her romantic opposite is Catra, who she hasn't seen since the breakup eight years ago when she left Catra behind to move across the country for a soccer scholarship.
But there's no denying the obvious chemistry between them when they get on stage, and the director won't hear of anybody else playing the roles.

Catra on the other hand is a lesbian icon (maybe not for the best reasons), she's a fine arts major, and a queer party scene queen. She doesn't have the best coping mechanisms and her drugs habits get a bit out of control. Anyways they fall in love obviously. But it's a journey to get there, and it's not over once they do.
