There were many unspoken sentiments that grew like the peskiest, most utterly loathsome, weeds within Shen Qingqiu’s throat – but never his heart.
No, a heart desolate as his was too hopeless for even the hardiest of weeds to take root within. Something that had long been left to wither; its barren soil lacking in the latent basis for love or care that those who surrounded him took for granted.
Or, perhaps, something had simply been wrong with him to begin with – some inherent flaw within his soul apparent enough to warrant being smothered with his swaddling cloth, rather than cradled. Something in his withered heart that rendered him incapable of growth, no matter how much blood he sacrificed to the scorched earth.
Truly, how else could he have ended up in such a state; hacking up filthy blood and spit-drenched petals into his lightly trembling palms.

Still standing, Shen Jiu rested his forehead against the stone column. He closed his eyes, though it did little against the stubborn tears clinging to his eyelids. Throughout all of the beast's torture, he didn't cry. Throughout most of his life, he didn't cry, and those few times he did were fake, the con he pulled with Qi-ge to earn some food in their bellies.
And yet here, now, when faced with something as small as taking a bit longer leaving the prison...
"It's cold and I'm tired and-" he whispered, more to himself than to Qi-ge. "Please, just let Xiao Jiu leave."
