Summary
Matt makes it out of Blackwood Pines alive, only to realize his life can't ever be the way it was, not for him or anybody else. Everybody's hurt, some more obviously than others, and some more willing to accept the fact than he is. Everyone copes (or doesn't) in different ways. Emily makes herself scarce, Jess insists she doesn't need to get better, Chris channels his grief into anger and then silence, and nobody knows what's happened to Mike.

As he cleaned up, Impulse kept talking, his voice soft but playful, as if speaking to a particularly fussy toddler. "You know, buddy, it's okay to be frustrated sometimes. Crayons aren't exactly the best art supplies, I get it. I mean, they break so easily. They’re waxy. Your hands get all messy…" He paused for dramatic effect, glancing over to see if Ren was paying attention. "But, you know, we could always switch to markers. Or even better, maybe some paints! You’d like that, right? Big messy paints, all over the place." He made a wide gesture with his hands, as if imagining a chaotic explosion of colour, trying to paint the idea of something fun.
Ren’s lips twitched slightly, though he kept his act going, still refusing to meet Impulse’s eyes. Impulse, however, wasn’t deterred. He knew how to play this game just as much as Ren did.
