“Tell me of Barovia, Dane,” she whispered. “Tell me of home.”
Dane felt a pulse of reluctance. Why was she asking this of him? More importantly, why now? He had always been loath to talk about his old life, and thus far his companions had respected the painfulness of those memories.
He exhaled. He had to admit, Trill deserved to know something. If at least because it was pertinent to the mission.
“It is a valley,” he began hesitantly, voice never rising above the wind. “Long ago, my father named it after his father, and built a castle there.”
Trill shivered, or something similar. “And the rest?”
Dane crossed his arms. “The rest is all scrubland and ruins. The people lock their doors and shutter their windows, hiding behind walls until the next pocket of daylight. The Vistani live apart, roaming as they please. No one but them gets in or out. Not even my father.”
“Except you,” Trill said.
“Except me.”

Summary
Zhuge Wei, at first glimpse, did not seem the sort of man who had fought in two death duels, communed with the Dragon Sage, and saved the Middle Kingdom from invasion. Rather, he looked like a monastery drop-out. His hair was just short enough that one could imagine him as a monk. His body was solid and whiplike, but it was hidden under the fine civilian clothes he had exchanged for his robes. His pleasant (if unremarkable) face was predominantly pensive, either from constant contemplation or simple empty-headedness.
Feng knew Wei was committed to the former interpretation, but she had witnessed plenty of evidence of the latter. Humans were already so small-minded, and though Wei had outfoxed her thrice, he had a tendency to withdraw into useless esotericism.
Such as…having a stark naked woman staring him down - and a huli jing at that, who could offer unimaginable pleasures he was well aware of - and doing absolutely nothing about it.

The main point of divergence from the original Legends chronology is Dark Empire: in this story, Palpatine was never cloned and died permanently in Return of the Jedi.
