Snape’s wand wavered. He wiped his sleeve harshly across his face. “Oh, I get it. Even the animals pity me now.”
Still, James didn’t leave.
Instead, he stepped closer.
Snape narrowed his eyes. “Don’t—”
But then James gently, carefully, lowered his head and nudged Snape’s arm with the side of his velvet muzzle.
Snape flinched. Froze.
Another nudge—softer this time, slower, resting against his wrist. Warm, steady.
Snape stared, lips parted.
His fingers trembled, brushing against the stag’s neck before falling away. “You… what are you doing?”
He didn’t ask it like a demand. More like a whisper of someone not used to kindness.
James lowered himself slightly, antlers tilting away. He sat in the grass beside him.
Snape blinked fast. His wand hand fell limp.
A moment passed.
And then another sob rose in his chest, unbidden, sharp.
He didn’t fight it this time. He leaned forward instead—just barely—and rested against the stag’s side. His fingers tangled in the coarse fur, gripping without reason.
He wept.
Not loud. Not broken.
Just tired.
The stag didn’t move.
Didn’t judge.
Just stayed.

Steve never minded living in Eddie’s shadow. He liked the chaos, the noise, the way Eddie looked like he might catch fire on stage at any second. What he minded, though he’d never admit it out loud, were the songs. Every crowd screamed Eddie’s words back at him, but none of them were for Steve. Not the angry anthems, not the messy love songs, not even the ballads that left reporters breathless.
Steve told himself it didn’t matter. He didn’t need the spotlight, didn’t need Eddie to spell his name in lyrics. He just needed Eddie to come back to him when the lights went down.
But five songs in, after years of motel rooms, arenas, fights, and backstage kisses that tasted like smoke and blood, Eddie finally wrote the one that was.

“Have you?” She asks, teasing. She nudges his foot with hers under the table, and he taps her back, drums his fingers on the table. “Something in particular caught your eye?”
“Someone in particular,” he says. “She looks beautiful today, by the way. That’s probably why they’re staring.”
“I think they’re staring at you,” she says, “you look really fit in this shirt.” She reaches across the table and tugs on his sleeve and her fingers brush the skin of his forearm and it’s like being burned but in the most pleasant way.
“I think they’re jealous,” James says, leaning closer.

He jolts upright with a gasp that feels more like a sob, adrenaline thrumming through his veins, heart beating erratically in his ears.
Something is tangled around his ankles, pinning him, trapping him and he kicks desperately, freeing his legs and throwing himself backwards. He hits a wall– he hits a wall, he hits a wall– and squeezes his eyes shut, waiting for teeth and ripping and pain, but–
“Ed!” Wayne calls from…somewhere, voice cutting cleanly through the panic fogging his brain. “Turn that noise down ‘fore you wake up the whole neighborhood!”
