Pike looks extra cute one day on her way between classes, thanks to Vax doing fun buns in her hair. A stranger takes notice of her, because who wouldn't notice a literal angel walking around campus, and Pike tells Vex about it.
Scanlan sees a literal angel walking around campus, and his tongue gets tied in the moment. He writes a song about the experience, and his supportive friend, Vax, encourages him to play it at his next coffee shop gig.

The police have a proposition for Pike- a sting, to catch her scamming family and get them off the streets. At the same time, Scanlan is suspected of involvement with a large crime ring in Emon, but he refuses to give up the identity of its leader. The solution? Fake a wedding between Scanlan and Pike, to attract the Trickfoots into town, and hope Scanlan will spill something to one of his oldest friends with enough time.
But as Pike learns the truth of why Scanlan left, their relationship grows more and more complicated, leaving her no easy answers. And while old feelings reignite, the Trickfoots are watching their every step. Pike and Scanlan just may find out how deadly a lie can be.....

Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.

By week five, she’s recovered and trusted enough to start taking short walks on her own, though she doesn’t miss how Joel almost always “happens” to be on the porch when she gets back, always giving her a quick once-over as if she’s gotten into something dangerous in the ten minutes she walked around without him. She rolls her eyes at it and grumbles to keep up appearances, but she can’t help liking it, just a little bit. She went three days of being so sick that she was unable to leave her bed in FEDRA when she was nine without anyone noticing. Now she thinks she’d be lucky to get a sneeze under the radar. It’s a lot, kind of, having someone so attentive.
…but it’s also pretty fucking nice.
Less nice is trying to find her feet in this new life, which requires all sorts of things she never knew she didn’t know.
Such as cracking an egg, apparently.
