This was their game, her and Jack. It had begun shortly after Pitt fest and had been slowly growing more and more by the year. It took her a while to understand that he was flirting with her. She knew he was a flirt, god the whole state probably knew that Jack Abbot was a flirt, but she had always counted herself out of that equation. That was until he had stared into her soul after teaching her a dangerous field procedure he probably hadn’t done in twenty years and told her she was the most brilliant doctor he had ever met.
She tried not to think about how domestic it felt, their little routine. He made her coffee every morning, and she made him a cup at night. Then they threatened to kiss one another and that was that. It was simple. Flirting. That was simple, easy. Right?

Samira and Jack have a mildly complicated, very flirtatious, loving friendship. Things start to change when an emergency renders Samira's apartment unusable and Jack just so happens to have a place for her to stay. It's a drawn-out note. Romantic vibrato, in the foggy lights. And for a brief moment she's smiling at him, but it's a leftover smile from her moment with Dana. The paper in his hand is warm, damp. Pushing between his fingers. And her smile shivers. Her eyes drop, lips pressing together like she's been caught. But he knows. It's him who's been caught in the headlights.

When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

What started as light flurries became aggressive snowstorms throughout the day. With such hazardous weather conditions, the day shift staff is advised to stay the night at the hospital. This is troublesome for many; Christmas is in a couple of days and people have plans.
