Summary
Everything was wrong. The nest was crudely made with no overhang to protect from the elements. There was no sound of birds, no insects crawling on the wood, no wind. The trees were disturbingly still. There was a wall beyond the foliage, painted to look like a forest.
Kristin was gone.
"-and this is our newest exhibit! This elytrian family is missing its matriarch, but we managed to rescue the father and chick." The voice was chipper and kind.
"Well. Where are they?" another voice demanded impatiently.
"Patience, gentlemen, patience." It was the man from earlier, the one with icy blue eyes and an ugly sneer. Phil wouldn't soon forget that creature's voice. "They should be waking up any moment now."
Or: Elytrian hybrid Phil and Wilbur are captured and put in a hybrid zoo. This can only go so well.

Half-foots are considered legally adults at 14 and can expect to live into their 50s. Tall-men are considered legally adults at 16 and can expect to live into their 60s. It’s been taken for granted that Half-foots are the ones with a shorter lifespan.

Summary
“...However, one thing that myself and others have noticed is that, despite this, the elytrian population in the Antarctic Guard has been—severely underutilized.”
General Blade’s expression shifts, the mirth disappearing. There’s a tightness around his eyes. One of his ears flicks. The man is suddenly as readable as a brick wall. “‘Severely underutilized’,” he repeats slowly.
It’s the most tactful way they could come up with to phrase what they were all thinking without sugar coating the situation, but Phil knows that, effectively, he’s just criticized (insulted) the wisdom of General Blade. General Blade, a pioneer in the art of warfare, the greatest military mind in living memory—a renowned, respected warrior.
And Phil is just a captain who’s extremely fortunate to have landed this private audience with the General in the first place.
Oh, skies have fucking mercy. Phil swallows. “That’s right, sir.”
