He starts out small.
Spends more time shirtless than he might otherwise do, and it does always get Ilya to pay attention to him, his eyes dropping down to his chest every few words.
So, he ups the ante a little, starts running shirtless with him, but it doesn’t work to escalate things, Ilya, for all his partying tendencies, takes hockey almost as seriously as Shane does, though not seriously enough to listen about how eating McGriddles three times a week is slowing him down, and so he focuses on workouts, only glancing at Shane once they’re done running and are panting and sweaty at the end.
He marks the spreadsheet, shirtless gets glances, workout does not up the instances of the glances, and there’s been no touching.
It’s a decent way to get buzzed and dizzy off of Ilya’s attention, but ultimately fruitless.
Or: Shane and Ilya are playing gay chicken, except Shane is the only one who knows

“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.
“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”
He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.
When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.

The airport looks like it always does. A sea of people oblivious to anything going on around them. Ilya is about to put his headphones over his ears when he sees something so familiar his brain almost doesn't register it. That is until he realizes that he's in fucking Moscow so this doesn't make any sense.
Because right there at the gate, spread out over several chairs, his duffle bag as a pillow, is the figure of Shane Hollander sleeping. The hood of his sweatshirt is up and he's wearing sunglasses, but Ilya would recognize the shape of Shane Hollander anywhere.
“Hollander?” he asks in shock, stepping closer.
Or, Shane shows up in Russia after learning Ilya's father died. Ilya did not ask him to do this. He just showed up. And now Ilya doesn't know what to do with himself. He proceeds to just go with it, and maybe listen to Shane for once.
Another song inspired fic, this time Ever the Same by Rob Thomas which I argue is underrated.
