“Come on, Mikey. Don’t go falling asleep now.” Raph holds Mikey close, as if he can single-handedly push back the wind and snow with his bare hands. But Donnie can’t help but notice that the eldest is also blinking a little heavier than usual. In fact, Leo is also somewhat sluggish, though he only notices because he’s watched how Leo darts between actions all his life.
Okay, so maybe staying out in the cold all day and fighting a giant polar bear wasn’t a good idea. For reptiles, that is.
However, the tiredness Donnie feels buzzing in his brain is easily pushed back. They’re all much safer than Mikey, who is slipping away from them with each second.~
Post “Snow Day”, Mikey tearing his coat has drastic consequences that result in him freezing and slipping into brumation.
TLDR: Box turtles, when hibernating, can have no detectable pulse or heartbeat. None of Mikey’s brothers are aware of this and believe that they have just watched their youngest brother die.

Raph had seen Mikey’s life flash before his eyes enough times to be cautious, and had watched him actually get hurt enough times to be paranoid. A scraped knee was enough to set off alarm bells these days, but when Raph thought about the broken bones, the puncture wounds, the cuts right through muscle that had left marks on his baby brother, he wanted to scream and hold Mikey safe against his chest forever. He wanted to stuff him in his shell and tape it shut, to carry him around and stomp anything into the ground that gave the slightest indication that it might want to hurt him.

Or: Raph would protect Mikey from everything if he could. But when Mikey goes missing one morning, he realises he can't.

Just a maybe, of course, because his judgments are almost always flawless, and this one shouldn't be any different. But admittedly, the constant effort to keep a hand overtop a profusely bleeding puncture wound, plus cleaning up blood in-between his brother's concerned glances...it's a hassle. All he's wanted for the last thirty minutes is to pass out.
But he needs to stay strong. This team can't take any more worrying. "OR: Donnie sustains a definitely-not-life-threatening injury, and out of worry for his brothers, keeps it hidden. Little does he know, such selflessness can have...unwanted and very damaging consequences.
