It isn’t the kind of thing that Atsushi expected to walk in on. Dazai holding a meeting in neutral territory -- that wasn’t weird in of itself, the warehouse barren and echoing as Atsushi walked through it. The office door was heavy when he swung it open, but it didn’t creak, nothing but the soft sound of displaced air to announce his arrival.
It was enough: Akutagawa’s eyes dart towards Atsushi for a brief second before they refocus on Dazai like Atsushi isn’t even there.
“Atsushi-kun,” Dazai offers, like Akutagawa isn’t on his knees on the concrete floor, like Dazai isn’t holding Akutagawa’s throat in a vice grip that looks like it could turn deadly in a moment’s notice.
Yeah, the weird part was definitely everything else about this.

It was a painting of an elegant bird, with brilliant gold plumage and a long, sweeping tail. Beneath its feet lay a nest filled with a myriad of gems and gold coins, gleaming obscenely even as they were engulfed in flames. The bird appeared to be flying from this opulent nest, flames flickering from its tail as it ascended towards the heavens. Nestled in the clouds was a brilliant emerald-hued dragon, scales gleaming as it appeared to extend a claw towards the bird, as if in invitation.
It also happened to be the one piece of art in their entire apartment that Eiji refused to explain.
