and she wasn’t alone. the same grizzled man kali saw in the junkyard stood by clinging to his rifle – the cop, taking a tentative step towards them, never moving his eyes off her as he muttered his question to jane,
‘you wanna tell me who this is?..’
slowly, jane took in a breath – not of exhaustion, but of relief. the corners of her lips twitched, almost ready to form a smile in her complete shock. then she parted them..
‘kali..’
and kali, just as delirious, felt herself form the same smile, hope flooding her chest.

until the relentless, broiling sun dipped it’s last corner under the open plane. until the blue slowly turned into a gradual navy, purples and dark reds on the horizon. until they were sure, all they could hear was the enormous silence around their tiny spec.
her grip stays tight on the wheel the whole time. her eyes never leave the road. she can feel a tiny trickle of blood running down the back of her neck, specs of dirt crumbling from her hair.
her heart thunders loudly in her ears. she doesn’t stop.

“Okay, wait, so...if you loose and fail to make La’an smile – because of course you will because it’s La’an – do Uhura and I both get out of a day of chores?.." Ortegas posed.
Uhura sighed again, leaning over her fruity pink cosmo to look more directly at Chapel “I reiterate – why, again, do you want to do this? I mean..La’an’s an amazing Starfleet officer, but..trying to go up and make easy conversation with her is kind of like sticking your hand in a dark hole and having a fifty percent chance a wild animal might bite you.”
“And I’m pretty sure La’an bites ten times harder then any animal.”
Chapel snorted. She flicked her gaze over again to the table. La'an was an easy splotch of red to spot - of the few still wearing their uniform after hours – and was still tied to her seat, hiding behind the glass at her lips. Chapel eyed the white cheeks, the sharp black wings decorating the dark eyes. It made her wonder how much time this polished, no-nonsense girl spends in the mirror in the morning, trying to get the deadly look just right.
“Call it...” Chapel murmured, quirking her head “..a scientist’s curiosity..”

that’s when, in among the terror that’d snatched her heart and the loneliness rattling inside her chest, an idea sprung up, a light beam suddenly shining through the dark.
elora hurried back to her spot, snatching her phone off the coffee table. jackie’s message lit up her screen, an open invitation.

“It..it just flew out of my hand!!!” Stacy screeched, the punch she'd been sipping on having jumped out of her cup and spraying all down her dress.
Dustin, as well as Lucas and Max, couldn’t believe the sight, at the total improbability...and then Dustin started grinning. Like a slow reveal, he moved his head just to the right – and found El slyly wiping her hand under her nose. Lucas started smiling too, Max, beside him excitedly whispering 'did she do that??' in his ear as he nodded back. With Stacy running off in tears, El casually hid away any evidence and simply turned back to her friends – catching Dustin’s gaze again, and letting loose a small smile.
Dustin’s grin grew.
He really did have the coolest friend in the world.
Then, El did something not-so-like her shy nature. She abruptly stood up from the table and her pale hand grabbed his wrist, smiling back in assurance at his confusion.
“They’re mouthbreathers.” She declared “I’ll dance with you.”

Dustin blinked back. He held up his family’s yellow phone receiver in his hand, not entirely sure he heard what he did.
“...Will?”
“I’m serious Dustin. You’ve got to stop this.”
“What? Giving my girlfriend flowers? What’s this even about Will?”
“You just gotta believe me on this one. You can’t give her any more.”
“But El loves flowers!”
“Exactly!”
"..You're losing me Byers!”
There was a heavy sigh from the other end of the line, sounding frustrated that Dustin couldn’t just magically read his friends’ mind. It was the same kind of sigh his mom often made.
“Look, I’m not saying that it’s not nice of you to do that for her – it is, and I know how much she loves them.” Will started, only to grow more adamant “But, Dustin, she cries every time they end up dying!”
Hearing that, Dustin felt his heart take a dip in his chest.
“Wait, she what??”

A thick, large purple bag of rock-hard candy hearts came swinging through the air, nearly knocking a surprised Jackie off her feet as it slammed into her chest. She let out a quiet ‘oof!’, sighing as she wrapped her hands around the bag to secure it. When she found her aunt’s gaze again, she saw that same warm, cheeky grin.
“It won’t kill you to do teenager-y shit sometimes, dummy.”

“What makes you think I know?” Elora raised a brow in return, shuffling with the same nerves “I think, I mean – from what I’ve heard or whatever – there’s usually...you know..”
The terrifying, exhilarating word lay out in the air, unspoken. Jackie nodded a bit too fast, trying to swallow though her thick throat.
“Right. Yeah. I mean..we uh...just ‘cause everyone else does that or whatever doesn’t mean..– I mean, if you don’t want to..–”
“You don’t want to kiss me?” Elora broke in, her brow rising even higher. Jackie’s eyes nearly popped out.
“No! Fuck, I mean – yes! Shit, I-I just, I do, I didn’t wanna force you –”
Gentle chuckling abruptly cut her off. Elora was smiling again, eyes sparkling.
“I’m just fucking with you.”
Jackie slumped, her eyes squeezing shut in realization. Part of her wants to be mad at the heart attack she nearly had – the other part of her...had to admit that was a pretty good one. A smile started cracking over her lips.
“Fuck you too..” She muttered. Elora giggled again.

“You have to take her.”
It’s the only option. Kali knows this. There was no time and Brenner’s men were coming, the faint thundering of footsteps not far off. The little, broken group was huddled and hidden amongst the lab’s hallway, bruised and bloody and smeared. The white lights flickered erratically around them and the walls shook with the looming power of the Gate rippling out. El’s tiny body laid on the floor in front of her sister, lips smeared in red and eyes tipped closed in exhaustion.
She couldn’t take them forward. And if Brenner wasn’t stopped now, then they were all going to die.
Kali reached a trembling hand out to the boy named Jonathan who was holding El’s head in his lap, bloody fingers gripping his wrist. His terrified eyes shot up to meet her desperate ones.
“Take her. Finish this.” She begged, ragged breaths escaping out in between “I’ll take care of them.”

“No, I know.” Medina said, surprising her “I mean, we’re all in an odd predicament here. There’s never really been an instance of two Slayers at once; it’s a foreign idea.”
“Ever?”
He shook his head “Not that we’ve ever known. And perhaps that’s why…adjusting, has been so difficult. Slaying is a solo position. Maybe you two aren’t suppose to exist together.”
Well, it certainly feels a bit like that. Rory didn’t say anything as Medina seemed to just be talking out his thoughts, but felt unable to leave the thought alone. Was that really true? Was one of them going to have to step down?
She couldn’t deny it, it was an attractive idea. Going back to being a normal teenager; back to school work and t.v lounging with her mom, with her only worry being getting the right grade point for Harvard. No more freezing graveyard watches. No more bruises and scrapes from fighting. No more fearing for her life. And instead, Paris could just pick up the rest of the work.
Yet, it was still an idea Rory couldn’t hop on board of yet. There was an invisible wall there she couldn’t read, keeping her from surrendering her title (especially to Paris).
