Summary
Whitaker is knocked out, stretched out in the middle of his bed with the duvet kicked all the way to his knees. It's a pretty sight, even though his wide-open mouth is releasing apneic snores and a sheen of drool is surrounding his lips.
Robby stands there for far too long, counting the moles spattered down his torso. They resemble a starry sky, and he wonders why he even left, when the best view he's seen in the last three months is right in his bedroom.

"Would you ever do something like that?"
Dennis looks up from his phone, "Huh?"
Robby realizes that he sort of just pulled that question out of thin air. That the last time they discussed it was hours and hours ago. But he's bored. And he's drunk. And he's curious. "The fuckin' no nut thing."
It's hard to tell in the dim park lights, but he thinks Whitaker is turning a very pretty shade of pink.
"Oh! Uh… is that really an appropriate thing to discuss with my boss?"
Dennis and Robby make a bet.

“Come here, kid.” One of Robby’s hands catches Dennis’s and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennis’s attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
“Nope, don’t look at that,” Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennis’s eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. “Look at me. Yep, good. I’m right here. You’re doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.”
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennis’s face. ”Robby—”
“I know. It’s just Dana and Perlah. We’re just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. You’re safe.” Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennis’s hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. “Okay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."

Robby’s gaze roamed across Dennis's face, tracing the planes and sharp angles of his features like he was trying to commit them to memory. He already had a long time ago. The horrible, aching knot in his chest dedicated to Dennis was a piece of Robby that he tried, time and time again, to rip out. Always to no avail.
If he had anything to come back for, it’d be this one thing.
"Marry me," Robby said.
Robby, about to head out for his sabbatical and never return, thinks to hell with it—nothing matters except for the very real, very inappropriate feelings he's been harboring for his first-year resident. So he proposes. And before he can take it back, Whitaker says yes.

“You’ll have to hold on, okay?” Robby chuckled, and Whitaker could feel his body shake, because they were sitting on the same flimsy, stupid seat. Nope. Nope, nope, nope. This was not happening. Some time ago, he remembered cussing out motorcyclists in their entirety, especially the ones who didn’t wear helmets, after a particularly bad collision incident had left them with six casualties, four entirely preventable. It didn’t seem relevant here. Dr Robby was driving. He felt his morals slipping away by the second.
“Hold on to where?” And yes, Whitaker was aware of how weird and stretched out his voice sounded, and no, he was not going to unpack that right now.
“Me.”

A lift home on the back of Robby’s Triumph Bonneville one evening pushes Whitaker’s inconvenient crush on his attending into the danger zone, and Robby seems entirely aware of this.

Robby's gaze is fixed on him. Dennis's broad shoulders are coiled tight; there's an angry flush creeping up his neck; his long fingers keep clenching into fists and unclenching at his sides.
"—and you don't even see how fucking condescending that is, how it makes me feel like I'm— like I'm not even a person to you, just some project—"
Robby watches Dennis unwravel under the weak spill of the streetlight filtering in through the window, his curls flashing, his voice hoarse and furious and he knows he should calm him down, shout back, or beg for forgiveness.
But he can't.
He's never seen anything more beautiful.or: robby comes back from his sabbatical to find dennis whitaker absolutely furious with him. this is, unexpectedly, not the worst thing that's ever happened to him

Dennis washed up and headed toward the room, pulling up the chart one more time on his tablet as he walked. Stable. No new changes since he last checked. Just waiting. Still not looking hopeful. He knocked lightly before entering. He stepped inside and pulled the curtain partially closed behind him, giving the family privacy. The overhead lights were dimmer now. The steady hum of the ventilator filled the quiet.
He turned and froze, a stuttered breath leaving his mouth as he choked on his greeting.
A gun.Or, Post-Sabbatical, Dennis is held hostage by a patient’s grieving family member.

Summary
Dennis swayed on his feet as the patient was rushed out so that another bed could be rolled in. Everything became disjointed, his body no longer responding to commands that should have been automatic. Panic surged, but even that felt distant, muffled, like he was underwater watching himself from somewhere just outside his body.
“Trin. Go get Robby.” Was all that Dennis could mutter before he was unable to get his lungs and mouth to cooperate again. Then his knees gave out. Before he hit the floor he felt his chest spasming one violent, final contraction that didn’t resolve. Then it just… stopped.
Or, Dennis’s heart stops. And of course, all he wants is to see Robby one last time.

Summary
The request was simple, routine. The kind of thing Dennis would have done without hesitation any other day. Anything to make Robby’s day a little easier, anything to earn one of those soft smiles or the quiet “thanks, sweetheart” he usually got in return. He liked being useful to Robby, liked being good for him. But the thought that had been circling in his head for days finally landed with perfect clarity. Maybe Robby just needed a push. Maybe the only way to make the man stop handling him like he was delicate was to stop being soft himself. If Dennis kept being sweet and obedient, Robby would keep being careful.
So Dennis forced the instinctive urge to help back down, swallowed his instinct to obey, and kept his hands busy in the drawer like he was looking for something important. He didn’t even look up. “No.”
Or, Dennis is tired of Robby being so sweet and gentle with him, so he decides to put the attending's patience for him to the test.

Robby’s mind drifted to all the times he’d pushed people away, walls built from duty and fear of burdening anyone else. Maybe what he’d needed all along was someone he physically couldn’t push away. Someone strong enough to put him in his place and stubborn enough to stay, yet still total and complete sunshine.
Or, it dawns on Robby just how physically strong Dennis is, and it makes him feel a lot of things.

That doesn’t mean he wants Robby to know. And so, when he innocently passes Robby his phone to type something in one night he doesn’t consider what his mate may find.
Robby flips through it for whatever he’s looking for and hums. He clicks the phone and hands it back to Dennis. Dennis thinks that’s the end of it, grabbing the remote to turn the volume back up until he hears Robby’s soft laugh behind him.
