Ellie gasped when she heard his voice, since she hadn’t been aware of his presence nor that he had been listening. Once again, she was looking up at him with those big eyes of hers and only in that moment Joel realized that Ellie didn’t only dislike him.
No, even worse. She was fucking scared of him.
That this was fear glistening in her innocent eyes, as she took a few steps backwards, hugging herself tightly in self-protection, her head hanging low like she was ducking, trying to make herself as small as possible and her eyes being focused on her socked feet.
Joel was looking at her, hating himself for spooking her like that and before he could come up with saying something to make her feel less tensed and more comfortable, Ellie turned around and hurried inside the safety of the guest room without taking a shower, like she had probably intended to do.

Since the cordyceps outbreak, omegas have become extremely rare. It was well known that pretty much every unmated omega had died in the outbreak. They were too small, too weak, too vulnerable to fight against infected and survive without an alpha's protection.
Joel had never found his omega. He hadn't bonded with Sarah's mother, a beta, and he didn't find anyone before the outbreak. After losing Sarah, he's closed off most of his alpha instincts, only leaning into his dominant traits needed to survive.
He and Ellie are a few hours hike from Jackson when they decide to stay the night in a cabin. Joel opens the door and is hit with a wall of scent, the unmistakable scent of an unmated omega on the verge of a heat.
aka Joel meets an omega, Addie, who has remained unmated through the protection of her family but is now on her own. He sees her through her heat but doesn't claim her, refusing to do that without her explicit consent.
