Summary
Once the smoke dissipated after the tragedy at Hale Manor, the survivors of the once-thriving pack were scattered like ash in the wind. For some, the next two years passed like a suffocating gust of wind, pinning them to the burning embers they could never quite heal from. For others, it dragged on slowly, allowing their scars to fade as they watched the grass on their scorched life regrow. Though, one thing was for certain: none of them came out of the flames unscathed.

Summary
Derek didn’t like people—they set him on edge in a way that nobody quite seemed to understand, much to his vexation. They always invited themselves into his space, like they somehow had a right to be there. They touched his clothes, his books, his skin—leaving their scents clinging to things that were supposed to smell like himself. They expected him to talk to them, and never managed to wrap their heads around the notion that he just couldn’t. Words were difficult for him to use most of the time, and despite all efforts to communicate in other ways, people just didn’t understand. But it didn’t matter anyway, because Derek didn’t like people and had no inclination to socialize with them.
But Stiles was…different, somehow. He did everything that Derek hated, and more. He intruded into Derek’s space, he rambled constantly, loudly, with flailing arms and fidgeting fingers—and his presence should have driven Derek up the wall, but it didn’t. Stiles didn’t set him on edge, like everyone else did. And maybe most surprising of all, he understood him.

Derek tensed as he heard a faint pop behind him—and quickly spun around at the sound of a stick breaking under someone’s foot. He bared his blunt teeth at the stalker, who immediately raised his gloved hands in surrender.
“Hey, Derek,” the man greeted, sending an anxious uncertainty coursing through Derek. He’d never seen this stranger before—he definitely would have remembered him, if he had. “I’m Stiles, and I’m not here to cause any problems. I promise.”
“That’s exactly what someone would say if they were gonna cause problems,” Derek reasoned. He wasn’t entirely sure what to do in this situation. If Stiles tried to attack him, he knew to howl for help—but Stiles wasn’t attacking. He wasn’t doing much of anything, actually, so it felt a bit preemptive to start crying out for his mom.

"I would’ve been here earlier, but nobody thought it would be smart to call the one person who’s intimately dealt with the Nogitsune before, so,” Stiles said bitterly as he threw his hands up. "Now I have a list of asses I gotta kick over this very avoidable fiasco. Scott’s first, since he’s the Alpha—I’m pretty sure that’s how that works. His responsibility, or whatever.”
The familiar sound of Derek’s car pulling into the driveway caught Eli's attention, and he grinned. “Is Dad on your list?”
“Hell yeah, Dad is on my list! Right under Scott.”
“Well, he just got home, so—”
Stiles didn’t wait to hear the rest of the sentence before stomping off in the direction of the living room—and Eli quickly scrambled to follow him, ready to eavesdrop on what was likely going to be a rather impressive and amusing lecture.

Theo didn’t have to check the calendar to know it was the anniversary of Brett’s death—it was written all over Liam’s face, just as it had been for the previous three years. He never asked Liam if he was okay, because he wasn’t—and nothing Theo could say or do would alleviate the pain, so he opted to silently take Liam’s hand in his own and rub his thumb soothingly over his knuckles. Liam stared at the ceiling, his lips slightly parted and brow relaxed as if there wasn’t an ounce of energy in him to feel any particular way at all—though the grief permeating the room, getting stuck in Theo’s throat like a hand squeezed around his neck, told a different story.

Now changed to be clear that this is a (Hale) pack-centric series—and while Sterek does take center focus in a lot of it, it is not solely a Sterek-centric series. The previous title reflected the first 6 short fics, as those were Sterek-centric, but the bulk of the series is about pack and what that means to each of the characters. Since the Hale pack symbol/tattoo is important, I thought this new title captured the focus of the series much better.*

The first time Derek sees Stiles, he’s sitting cross-legged next to a kiddie pool filled with floating plastic fish just outside the door of his classroom, clapping his hands along with the rest of the kids around him as a boy in blue reaches out with a net to scoop one up. There’s a sandbox on the other side of the door that kids are pawing through, nudging each other as they dig up magnetic letters, and through the door Derek can see the rest of the students sprawled across the room reading books.
