He was the one person who made her feel like she didn't have to pretend to be so tough, maybe because he was one of the only people who'd ever looked out for her. Max and Steve have a lot more in common than either of them would like to admit. Neither of them had a great childhood and had even worse parents... maybe that's why they grew so close, maybe it's the mutual understanding that with no family to look out for them, they've got to keep the other alive.
