“Fine,” Jon says, and he tries to ignore the sulky tone of his voice, “fine. What do you suggest?”
Martin pauses, like he’d not expected Jon to give in so easily. Jon’s never been particularly agreeable, but he still feels vaguely offended by the blatant surprise. “W-we,” Martin stammers, clears his throat, continues on much more confidently, “we go in together.”
Or: it takes close quarters and a full 24 hours to finally get them on the same page.

“Sure,” Georgie says, still laughing at him. At least someone is having fun. “Don’t you have assistants for that kind of thing?”
“Yes, but…” He huffs, scratching the back of his neck. “I wasn’t going to ask one of them to download an app called...Lover? Lov-rrr? I don’t know how you say it.” He flaps his hands dismissively. “There are--unions and such. It wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Martin owns a flower shop.
He starts crushing on the guy from the Magnus Institute, but why does Jon keep needing so many flowers for workplace deaths, anyway?? -

Summary
Jon has had The Conversation with a grand total of five people so far. Four out of five times, it ended the relationship immediately. One time, it was only one out of many factors that ended the relationship further down the line.
It stands to reason then that the problem lies not with his – partners –, but with him.
That’s okay. Jon has made his peace with that. He doesn’t need to – he’s fine. He’s fine.
So what happens when Martin asks him out?

Summary
Martin set his glass on the table, and with shaky hands, unfolded his dare. The first word he saw was kiss, which sent his heart hammering, his breaths rattling in his ribcage like a bag of cheap marbles. The second word wasn’t really a word. It was a name.
Jon.
“At midnight,” Sasha added unhelpfully.
Or, Martin eats a few grapes and makes more than a few choices.

"I was trying to write a poem for you."
If it weren't for an entire lifetime of compensating for clumsiness and poor motor control, Martin would be covered in hot tea and shattered ceramics right now.
"Oh. Wow," he says eloquently. -

Peter’s wrong, of course. When it’s all over, Martin does still want to tell Jon everything. It’s just—well, there’s a few things they need to work through first before they can get there.
Martin and Jon find each other again in Scotland.

“Yeah.” Martin nods. “That’s — I mean, it’s like that. Holding your hand. I’m not gonna… I won’t drift away. You, um.” He pauses, takes a breath. “In a weird, metaphysical sense, you keep me… grounded.”
“Like an anchor,” Jon blurts.
“Like an anchor,” Martin agrees.
Jon and Martin run away together, reconnect, and settle into something that almost looks like a normal life.

Summary
"They haven’t really stopped touching each other since they left the Institute - small brushes here, comforting weight there. Jon knows - lowercase k - that it’s helping Martin stay grounded, after a trip into the literal realm of eternal loneliness. He thinks it’s helping keep himself grounded too. They haven’t talked about it."
Apparently what they need to realize how much they both love each other is some minor sleep problems, a little hand holding, and a sunrise.

At their first holiday party together, the archival assistants play snog, marry, avoid. It brings up things Martin would rather it hadn't.
5+1 kinda formula - going through the seasons with every office party this shitty institute throws. slow burn..... 5 parties they didn't and one they did you all know the drill. pining with a happy ending.

"It's easy! All you have to do is catch Martin under the mistletoe six times,” Tim explained with bright enthusiasm. Jon could practically see him vibrating from his spot on the bottom rung of the ladder. “First one to kiss him on the lips wins!”
“Why six?”
“It’s sort of like each time you catch him, you get one point,” Sasha explained. “First he kisses you on your hand-”
“Like a true gentleman,” Tim interrupted.
Sasha gave him a little glare, then continued. “After that, it’s a kiss on one cheek, then the other. Then he gives you a kiss on the forehead, then nose, then finally a kiss on the mouth.”
“And that’s how you win Christmas,” Tim said with a nod.

They’re standing entirely too close to each other in front of the hotel desk when the clerk asks them whether they’d like a double, twin, or two singles, and Martin absolutely bottles it.
‘Uh,’ he says, at exactly the same time as Jon says, ‘Oh.’
———
There’s a conversation that Martin and Jon need to have after the Lonely. Unfortunately, they are - historically - fairly terrible at putting stuff into words.
