Dean doesn't think about it. Not about what it means, not about what it makes them, not about how it affects him. This life—that's not how things work. It's just this, these "in the moment" moments that always slip right out of his fingers because he lets them. He doesn't try to hold onto them, and neither does Cas, and maybe they shouldn't.
Cas kisses him like no one else does, like no one else ever has. Dean absolutely does not think about it unless it's happening to him, and then he doesn't have the ability to think at all. What does it say about him that he occasionally kisses his best friend, who's a man? Dean doesn't know, and he doesn't really want to find out, either.

In the spring of 1944, the 104th Medical Battalion of the United States Army is disbanded, and its men reassigned to various infantry companies in preparation for their invasion of occupied France. For First Lieutenant Novak, this is less than helpful, as he has so far met his platoon’s designated medic a grand total of twice, and has both times found Sergeant Winchester to be the optimum combination of reckless, arrogant, and downright insufferable so as to make cohesive platoon function near impossible. When the time comes to move out, however, Castiel has to reconcile himself to the fact that men are going to go down and trust that Dean Winchester may well be the only person who can put them back together again. It puzzles Castiel, where Dean draws the line between what is meaningful and what it is worthless.

except, as it turns out, falling apart happens in increments, and healing does, too: it happens when you gnaw a hole in your lip trying to keep quiet only to have the words escape; when you realize that the ghost you've been seeing out of the corner of your eye is yourself; when your best friend smiles, and you allow it to take your breath away.
it happens through the smallest of things: bird feeders, and cacti, and pasta shapes.

He catches himself daydreaming about it at least a thousand times more often after the first time he watches George interact with younger fans.

“Okay, so, like I told him–it’s fucking crazy. But George is fucking somebody. And he’s doing it all the goddamn time, and I can hear him, like, almost nightly, and I have no idea who the fuck she is. Like, I’ve never even fucking seen her.”
There’s silence. Then, there’s choked laughter.
“Her?”
“Why is that all you want to fucking focus on?” Sapnap asks, bewildered. “Yes, her. He’s not fucking himself, is he? George is bringing a stranger into our house, and I bet Dream doesn’t even know.”
It’s the first time it dawns on him, too–that Dream probably isn’t aware, either, and would be more paranoid than Sapnap to know some random girl was coming into their house nightly. And there’s something about George being so unwilling to introduce them that rubs him the wrong way. Something weird is going on, beyond just the insanity of George being able to get some.
Or, Sapnap is an oblivious idiot.
