Summary
The scent of efflorescence is the only thing left. When it lingers in the air, the dead are sitting alongside the living: white chrysanthemums, freesias, and lilacs that paint the snow with gashes of color. Red spider lilies blooming with the flames of their petals like torches. Most notice the yellow of the spicebush, the saffron within it, but never the flower itself.
Yi Sang's body feels too tight. Something's trying to claw its way out from his chest, all yellow petals and green leaves. That dysphoric tightening in his throat makes it hard to breathe, like the air’s made of the same salt water that stings his eyes when he looks at himself. No matter how much he rips up those leaves, or cuts the stems and stalks, more grow. There is no solace, even in the season of spring, no matter how hard he tries to ease the tension by eroding the earth underneath.
The tightening gets worse at the thought of being alone again. He'll pray for some semblance of belonging, asking them for companionship, whatever form it will take. Even if he'll be spat out at the end, covered in venom and mangled to pieces.
Yi Sang helps soothe his discomfort with a friend.
