Al-Haitham was so close Kaveh could feel the warmth of his breath on his lips when he responded. “Yes.”
“Would it be fair of me to keep you?” Kaveh asked, his eyes finally opening. “Would it be selfish of me to let someone’s child get hurt in your stead when the likelihood of you walking away in better shape far outweighs theirs?”
“You are the prince. What you say goes,” came Al-Haitham’s only reply.
Kaveh brushed his thumb against his cheek.
“I can never win, can I?”
“With me, you can,” Al-Haitham promised, determination sparkling in his eyes. “I only ask for your favor.”
Al-Haitham fights a tournament in Kaveh's honor. It goes terribly wrong.

“I love you, Kaveh,” Alhaitham tries again.
“Tell me again when you’re not burning up.”
When Alhaitham falls sick, he ends up confessing his love. Unfortunately, Kaveh refuses to give him a response until he recovers.

“Sir, kindly do not obstruct us,” says the matra sharply. “We are in the midst of carrying out an arrest.”
“An arrest?” repeats Kaveh, incredulously. “You’re arresting him? You’re arresting him? Why, what in Teyvat has he done?”
The Archon Rescue Operation is going as smoothly as it possibly can — that is, until Kaveh returns prematurely from his desert trip, and runs into Alhaitham at the absolute worst possible moment.

“You’re back,” Kaveh pointed out in a surprised tone as he placed his basket down on the counter.
“I sure am,” Alhaitham replied.
“I was hoping that you’d chalk up yesterday to nothing more than a dream.”
“I almost did, but I couldn’t get you out of my mind.”
When Alhaitham stumbles upon a strange book left behind by his grandmother that transports him to another world, the revelations he learns flips his own world upside down. Alhaitham is determined to find answers, and it doesn't hurt that there is a pretty witch willing to help him out.

Summary
“I thought you said you could resist me.” Kaveh playfully knees Alhaitham in the stomach with a teasing expression.
Alhaitham tries to think of an excuse. He really does. But with Kaveh staring at him with reddened lips, his chest still heaving from the previous events, all he can admit is, “I lied.”
People tend to wonder how Alhaitham can resist Kaveh. The answer is that he can't. Rather, he fails miserably trying.

Abtin and Faranak had shared a glance between them for a moment before it clicked.
“Oh, my dear little light, that is your seelie,” Faranak had said gently, pulling Kaveh’s joined hands into her own. “Only you can see it, and I’m sure it looks most wonderful.”
“That little seelie is linked to your soul’s betrothed, my son. Everything they feel will reflect in that fairy’s wisps.” Abtin patted Kaveh on the shoulder, a grin matching Kaveh’s own on his lips. “So study it well, so that you can learn all about your future love.”

Summary
And, apparently, there’s another term hidden in the way Alhaitham leans in, lifting his eyes to Kaveh’s, lashes fluttering in a mix of intoxication and trepidation, laced over with the most ardent of wishes, akin to the yearning that Kaveh feels whenever Alhaitham is close to him.
But the liquor is too strong, and the night is peaceful with the thrum of the contented conversation of their best friends in the background, and Alhaitham tips to the side, leaning his head against Kaveh’s shoulder as his eyes flutter shut, grasping his fingers instinctively.
When Alhaitham leans his body against him, sighing as he dozes off on his shoulder, Kaveh understands that the word ‘betrothed’ is embodied in the faint outline of a ring box in Alhaitham’s pocket.

The toddler began to cry, and then he started to cough from trying to cry too hard, snot dripping down his face. Another adult came hurrying over to help him to his feet before they went inside to head, presumably, to the nurse’s office.
Loud, chaotic, dirty. Everything that went against Al-Haitham’s standards.
“Working here as what?” Kaveh blinked. “Like admin or something? That’s probably quiet and far enough from kids for you. Though—”
“No,” interrupted Al-Haitham. “I don’t.”
After getting fired from a prestigious architecture firm, Kaveh moves back to his hometown to raise his five-year-old brother only to find that an old college "acquaintance" is his little brother's kindergarten teacher.

The man closed his eyes, his brow furrowed. “...You don't.”
Kaveh had never thought about reincarnation, but from the first time he met Alhaitham, there was always this inexplicable feeling of wanting to comfort him whenever he had a painful expression. Kaveh was determined to help, but Alhaitham seemed to bear hundreds of years of sorrow and kept chasing a shadow of Kaveh's past.

Kaveh, standing in the doorway of what was once their home, staring at the wall with glistening eyes as he tells Alhaitham farewell for the last time. It was the first word Kaveh had said to Alhaitham in days, and it would be the last for many to come.

“You–” Kaveh furrows his eyebrows, at a loss. “Were you even listening to me this whole time?”
“Kaveh, please.”
Alhaitham and Kaveh's relationship is supposed to move slowly. Yet, when Kaveh breaks down and Alhaitham takes care him, Kaveh accidentally blurts out "I love you" much too early.

Kaveh clicks his tongue. “Well, I hope you are also aware that with all these requirements, you don’t get a set (A+B), or even (A+B+C). Yours is a set comprised of the entire Sumerian alphabet!”
Kaveh has had enough of Alhaitham always loitering around the house. In an attempt to get Alhaitham to go out more often, he jokingly tells him to start dating someone. Much to Kaveh’s shock, Alhaitham agrees—and promptly assigns him as his personal matchmaker. And even though Alhaitham’s requirements for his ideal partner are annoyingly specific, Kaveh refuses to back down from a good challenge. He’s confident in his abilities—that is, until his own feelings start getting in the way...

Kaveh's vermillion eyes gloss over, his jaw tight. "You keep saying that," he hisses through his teeth, his voice coming out small and unsure, "You keep suggesting that I leave."
"You know very well that I prefer being on my own, and you're worth at least five people on a good day."
Alternatively: Kaveh leaves for good after a particularly vicious fight between them, but Alhaitham is okay with it.
Until he isn’t.
