Summary
Kakashi, Konoha’s gym leader, has been in love for years. If asked years ago, he would have said he could never figure out how to be friends with someone as kind-hearted as Iruka. He doesn't usually enjoy being wrong - but sometimes, it's nice.

Take the four-month PRO contract, Kakashi had said. It’ll be fun, Kakashi had said. Well—no, what had actually happened was that Kakashi had taken Sasuke out to a bar in downtown Gatineau, bought him two shots of tequila, and said, “Here’s the thing. PRO is hell and you’ll be more miserable than you’ve ever been in your life, but if you can tough it out then I can transfer you back to the NCR as a program officer no problem. I’m talking indeterminate position, salary bump, benefits, vacation, prospects for advancement, the whole package. Think on it, okay?”
And now here Sasuke was—back in the NCR, mildly scarred from four months working under Kabuto—only to find his apartment uninhabitable, his relationship moving faster than anticipated, his out-of-touch manager even more out-of-touch than he remembered, and the future of his brand new indeterminate-with-benefits-and-vacations position hinging on the achievement of a successful BBB on his language test. Summary
The last five years of Iruka's life have been hectic, to say the least. The disaster that was the chuunin exams, then Naruto's departure with Jiraiya, the village's eventual destruction and in short order, the Fourth Shinobi War. And in between this, the good along with the bad - the joy he continues to find at the Academy, the time he's able to spend with his friends, the pride he feels each time he sees his student's graduate and every time he hears tale about Naruto's continued growth. Not to mention, his and Kakashi's developing relationship slowly turning into something frighteningly serious. Soon enough the war is a year behind them, and he watches with pride as a newly married Hokage walks across the stage to accept the robes. Iruka returns home afterwards with not only the leader of the village, but also his husband. Despite everything he's seen and lived through, life is good, and there's nowhere else he'd rather be.
It's really too bad he can't remember any of it.
