Summary
Maru pushes himself off of him, and falls on his back next to him. Tsurugi's vision blurs, the world dissolving, until it's just the two of them. Laying on the ground like open wounds.
“Shut up, Maru. Don’t make me regret not killing you.”
“As if you could have,” Maru says. His face turned to the stars above. And for a moment Tsurugi wonders what Maru is looking for every time he looks up into the vast darkness of the night sky irritated with stars.
Tsurugi exhales. “You—You still haven’t realised it, have you?”
Maru turns to face him. A confused look on his face. The way the stars reach down to sparkle in his eyes, to lighten the dark shadows that have come to settle into his hair, makes Tsurugi’s heart flutter against his chest. He doesn’t look away. Not now, not ever.
“I might not be able to take you out in a fight,” there is a pause in his words, as if it could make the gravity of what he is about to say less frightening. “But I could have slit your throat the second you passed out.”
“Then why haven’t you?”

Several years had passed since the last human sacrifice, and now it was Yuuta's turn to be offered. He was "the purest" of his village. The most mindful, the most patient, and definitely the kindest. He lived in a way that would allow not only himself but other people to live well, and the village figured to take that to its most logical extreme.

Yuuta knows. As he’d prepared to leave Shoko’s clinic for the meeting, Maki had pulled him aside and uttered words filled with such certainty he’d gone cold.
They took Toge. We can’t leave him there, Yuuta, they’ll kill him—if they haven’t already.
He doesn’t know much about Toge’s childhood—only what he’s been able to piece together from context and the few hints Toge’s willingly offered—but he doesn’t need to have the gory details to understand that most children born into a high-standing jujutsu clan do not lead easy lives. If Maki says that Toge is in danger in his family home, then Yuuta doesn’t need any more reason to retrieve him.
He was too late to help before. He won’t be again.

Is it right to get close to someone if you know there might not be a future?
Yuta has spent so long keeping himself away from the world that opening up to someone seems unfair. Post-mission nights with Toge show him that maybe opening up isn't the worst thing. But the closer he gets to Toge, the more he learns that there's something off with Toge and the Inumaki clan.
